Earlier, we reported on how to get the perfect red pout for fall, but we know the “old Hollywood glamour” look can be an acquired taste for everyday wear.  If ruby red smackers just aren’t your style, we have good news –  “new Hollywood” nude lips are in now too.  In fact, they were all over the red carpet at the 2009 Emmy’s (think Christina Applegate and Heidi Klum).

According to celebrity makeup artist Belinda Moss, not all stars are born with naturally gorgeous lips, and even the most natural-looking lips on the red carpet get help from some insider tricks (to actually look “natural!”). Moss, who has worked her magic on big name stars, including Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, Eva Longoria and Gisele Bundchen, offers insight on how to achieve a luscious, natural-looking pout:

  • soft lips
    Smooth Operator:
The key to great looking natural lips is having healthy looking lips – nothing looks worse than flaky, peeling lips. “Dab your favorite moisturizer on your lips,” suggests Moss. After a few minutes, use a clean, damp, soft toothbrush to brush off any flaky bits of dry skin.  Now, you’re ready to achieve the best looking, dewy pout in town!
  • Go Nude: Pale and nude lips are very popular now. “You can achieve a beautiful nude lip look by taking a few simple steps. Apply your concealer on your lips and cover your lips with a nude lip liner,” says Moss. “Finish up with Softlips lip conditioning balm with SPF 20 to help condition your lips and give them a soft, smooth look.”  If you’re looking for a little pop, apply your favorite clear lip gloss over the lip balm. Moss suggests using a clear gloss with a little silver or gold to add a little extra shimmer.
  • Bold Peepers: A great way to make your beautiful, natural lips more noticeable is by brightening up your look with some color on your eyes. “Try using colored mascara in bright blues and burgundies,” Moss says. “Remember when using bright colors, a lot goes a long way, and keep the rest of the face neutral to avoid looking overdone.”  The darker the eye, the more neutral and natural your lips and cheeks should be, Moss says.
