Hair Therapy 411

March is the month when winter hasn’t quite said goodbye and spring has yet to make an appearance. It’s an ugly month for skin, nails, and especially hair. One way to treat your mane to a day of pampering is to invest in a quality conditioning hair masque. These hair masques are great for infusing hair with moisture and nutrients that’s desperately needed to get through the final stretch of the winter season. From the salon to the corner store, these masques are a great way to put a little spring in your step while it’s still freezing outside.

Sexy Hair Moisturizing Treatment

Those who want to condition and go green have found the perfect solution with Sexy Hair’s Moisturizing Treatment. The masque is made with 76 percent organic ingredients including a combination of aloe vera juice, organic goji berry extract, organic avocado extract and organic sunflower oil. It’s great for gals on the go since the product works in three to five minutes and leaves hair feeling silky and smooth. Also, for those who are sensitive to strong scents, this product has an extremely light, fresh scent that won’t bother your senses.

The Scoop: The BX team loves anything that involves going green and helping rid harmful chemicals from our daily products. We enjoyed using this product and even taking a break from some of the stronger scents that usually accompany our daily shower routine. The treatment left our hair feeling revitalized, however not as smooth as some of the other treatments we have tried. However, that is a small price to pay for helping the environment. Another valid point is price. Retailed at $26.95 for 6.8 fl oz., (a.k.a. a huge bottle), Sexy Hair Moisturizing Treatment falls in the middle on our pricing scale and is a great alternative to expensive salon product lines.

Arrojo Hair Repair Masque

Nick Arrojo from TLC’s What Not to Wear has created a fabulous hair masque for the masses. A mixture of keratin protein, coconut oil, oat proteins, silk amino acids, and vitamin B5 all come together nicely and create noticeable results. The masque is touted as a great way to repair and strengthen hair while naturally hydrating your locks giving them a smooth texture and great elasticity. This product requires using very little to achieve amazing results and is great to use for a traditional hair treatment (think 10 to 20 minutes) or as a quick fix (three to five minutes) to help give hair an extra boost.

The Scoop: We love this product! On the bottle it recommends a 10-minute hair treatment, which we did in the shower. We used the extra time to shave our legs and took the time to pamper ourselves and really relax. Being forced to take a moment for yourself is an extremely rewarding experience and is something we should all do more often. After the treatment, our hair felt magically soft and silky and styled great. We could feel the effects of the masque for days afterwards too. The price falls right in middle at $15.00 for 4.2 fl oz., and you don’t have to use much to get great results, which makes the product go a long way. The only down side is that it can’t be found at your local drugstore, as it’s sold exclusively through Arrojo’s website, Space NK, QVC television, Pure Beauty, Beauty First, and Trade Secret.

Neutrogena Triple Moisture Hair Mask

The only product not to spell “mask” as “masque” (takes away some of the class, no?), this is a really affordable solution to give your hair some lovin’ without breaking the bank. Retailed at $7.45, this mask has a great smell – think tropical – and a really nice consistency. The product uses three main ingredients to help give hair a soft exterior: olive extract to help penetrate the hair to the center, meadowfoam seed to help moisturize the middle and sweet almond wraps around the surface to keep moisture locked in.

The Scoop: This mask is a great way to condition without having to buy an expensive product. In fact, it’s not much more expensive then some of the other conditioners we buy, which means sometimes we’ll even use this as our regular conditioner when we feel we need to add a little something extra. However, much like everything else, moderation is key. Using too much of this particular masque – ahem, we mean mask -  leaves hair feeling greasy and can really weigh down hair when trying to style. We recommend using a little as a daily conditioner to help with split ends and dry hair.

Curlisto Systems Deep Therapy Masque

For a true salon experience, Curlisto Systems Deep Therapy Masque is an eight-minute treatment that thoroughly conditions hair to feel as soft as butt-ah. Using amino acids, vitamins, and botanical extracts to help revitalize and condition hair, the product also contains rice, corn, and wheat proteins to help keep hair healthy and frizz-free. The product line is intended for those with seriously curly hair who require a deep, hydrating hair masque to help tame curls, however it’s also great for those who don’t have curls but want to infuse hair with much needed nutrients.

The Scoop: We know that this is one of the BX team’s favorite treatments. However while it’s totally worth the price in our minds, it also runs on the high side and is more of a once a month luxury than a weekly routine. For a 4 oz. container, it’s $32.00, 16 oz. will cost you $98.00, and 32 oz. runs $168.00. For this product we like to maximize our experience as much as possible (since they are few and far between) by applying the masque out of the shower and leaving it on for a half an hour to an hour. Once you rinse, you’ll understand that this is one of the best conditioning masques we have ever tried, but it’s also something to indulge in only once in a while.
