Fall is just around the corner. As some people look for new back-to-school fashions and others just want to freshen up their style for the season, beauty blog BeautyXpose sought out the hottest new fall hair trends. Celebrity colorist Adrian Wallace and stylist Ryan Cunningham — both from the illustrious Rita Hazan Salon in NYC — gave us the inside scoop on the latest haircut and color looks for fall 2009. And with past clients including top editors, socialites and celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, we’re all ears!
Adrian’s Color Tips
1. Color tones for fall are chestnut, caramel and honey. These are very rich — but it’s important to still make sure they are bright.
2. The highlights should be ‘tone on tone.’ This means the highlights should not be too light from the rest of the hair.
3. Redheads should be toward the auburn/copper side. It gives off depth and richness, like Coco Rocha or Amy Adams.
4. From the summer, blonds, it’s time to make it deeper and get away from blond that washed you out. Honey and deep golden tones work better in the fall and winter as your tan fades.
5. Don’t take deepening the color to an extreme. If you are a blond, go deeper and richer, but take it slow. Don’t go from blonde to brunette just because the seasons are changing. Go in the shades of caramel and chestnut if you are a brunette.
Ryan’s Cut and Style Tips
1. Going into fall, we are looking at long hair with lots of interior layers and shape with soft bangs like Katy Perry.
2. Long hair with strong bangs — with minimal layers for brunettes — create a look like Jessica Alba.
3. For styling, use a round brush that will break it down and mess it up to produce a texture that says “rock luxury” like Kate Moss.
4. If your hair is on the shorter side, keep it classic. A strong shape with nice texture, but not too “Barbie.”
Among his work on celebrities, socialites and a slew of editors, Adrian has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America and America’s Next Top Model and is a frequent contributor in top fashion and beauty magazines including: Health, Redbook, Seventeen, Shape, Teen Vogue and more.
Ryan Cunningham has been in the industry since he was 18 years old, first starting a Vidal Sassoon then heading to Bumble & Bumble for 8 years. He’s now been at Rita Hazan Salon a little shy of a year. He’s styled the tresses of Kevin Connelly, Elizabeth Hurley and Gwyneth Paltrow.
