While nail polish trends may come and go (holographic nail polish is uber hot for 2010), a pristine manicure is always in style. But short of repainting your nails every morning to avoid chips, how do you keep your fingertips looking perfectly manicured? The secret lies in taking three simple steps before you even begin to lacquer up.

Three Ways to Make Your Manicure Last

1. Store Polish Properly

While it may be fun to paint your nails poolside, make sure to put away your polish right after using it. If you leave it in direct light and in high temps (i.e., in the sun next to your magazines and suntan lotion), some of the ingredients can begin to deteriorate. In frigid wintery weather, make sure you don’t leave your polish in the car or near a drafty window, since cooler temperatures can thicken it out. While nail polish never really “goes bad,” its quality can be affected by poor storage, so make sure to keep it where temperatures range from 62 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Use a Base Coat and Top Coat

Think base coats and top coats do nothing except add shine? Not so. A good base coat provides a smooth uniform layer to the nail that helps the next layer of polish adhere properly (color bonding). It also helps protect against staining and chipping, creating a strong foundation for the entire manicure. After applying your favorite nail polish color, seal it on and finish your look with a high-shine top coat with UV-protectors to avoid yellowing and discoloration.

3. Choose a Polish with Good, Safe Ingredients

It doesn’t matter how well you’ve stored your varnishes or what base and top coat you’re using if the nail polishes themselves aren’t well made. Look for polishes that are good for your nails and that also contain safe ingredients. For the past 10 years, Nubar has demonstrated a strong commitment to health with a consistent three-free formula, which means all of its nail polishes are free of harmful, carcinogenic (cancer-causing) ingredients including formaldehyde, toluene and phthalate (DBP).
