BX: First, how did you get into this industry, and what’s your favorite part of the job?
NA: I was in the retail business, and had the opportunity to buy into an established cosmetics company, and that was start in the industry. Two years later, in 2000, I bought the company and started Nubar. My favorite part of my job is creating new products and specialty colors.
BX: What do you think makes Nubar stand out from other nail polishes?
NA: Our unique color selection and our well pigmented formula.
BX: How do you decide on a color pallete for a new collection? What comes first — the collection theme or the colors themselves?
NA: For my collections, the theme comes first. I get my inspiration from a lot of different sources. I visit my distributors in many different countries and get new ideas from local style and culture, and also from more traditional sources like nature.
BX: Where did the idea of the new matte shades come from?
NA: I’ve had sample bottles of these shades for many years, and after attending Fashion Week for 2009, saw that they would be well received in this year.
BX: Are you surprised to see many other polish companies coming out with matte shades for fall?
NA: Not at all. I believe they will go more mainstream, and that we will see more matte shades coming out.
BX: What other trends do you think we’ll see coming this fall and winter?
NA: I see polish going toward nature and anything from the earth.
BX: Do you think there is one universal shade that works for every woman? If so, what is it?
NA: Nubar Sexy Red
BX: What general color do you think is just “under-appreciated” (not worn enough by women)?
NA: Gemstone colors are not worn enough.
BX: What’s your philosophy — should fingernails match toenails?
NA: No, but they should be coordinated.
