WTF of the Week: LifeGem Diamonds

Aunt Sally?

Aunt Sally?

Ever see something that just leaves you scratching your head in bewilderment? In BeautyXpose’s “WTF of the Week,” we share our favorite befuddling moments for your pleasure.

They always say that diamonds are a girl’s best friend. But what if the precious gem you were wearing was made out of your best friend? That’s a possibility according to LifeGem Created Diamonds, which offers diamonds “created from the carbon of your loved one as a memorial to their unique life, or as a symbol of your personal and precious bond with another.”

And if that thought didn’t gross you out enough, here’s another. The company recently made headlines when a Michael Jackson fan revealed a LifeGem diamond would be created from a lock of the singer’s hair that was singed during the infamous Pepsi commercial.

When pondering my own LifeGem, Kristin helpfully suggested I get a diamond-encrusted dog collar created out of the remains of my current dogs, as a lovely keepsake for future doggie generations. Yeah — no thanks.

Hey, it may offer comfort to some, but for us, LifeGems deserves a resounding “WTF.”

  1. £2975 buys a 1/2 carat canary far less expensive than any other Memorial Diamond maker

  2. Many people find comfort in having their loved ones close to them, in different ways – Some keep the cremated remains on a shelf in the living room, some keep photos around to remind them of happy times. This is just another way to memorialize the dead and to celebrate the living (some people are doing this for weddings — combining the bride and grooms hair). There's another company, DNA2Diamonds that creates personal carbon diamonds – maybe if you read one of their customers stories…one of the reasons for this type of business would be clearer: http://dna2diamonds.blogspot.com/2009/09/customer…
