Beauty Experiment: Clip-in Hair Extensions

Under fluorescent bulbs (and via webcam)

Does fluorescent lighting lie?

When Spoiled Pretty reported T.J. Maxx had Jessica Simpson Hairdo clip-in hair extensions for a fraction of the cost, I immediately made my way to the mall.  Alas, in a cruel twist of fate, they had virtually every color in the world…except mine.  But, as I walked out of the store, dejected, I ran smack into a kiosk selling generic clip-in extensions.  And they looked just as good as the Jessica Simpson ones!

Or so I thought.

After snapping my new 15-inch, synthetic bouncy waves in place, I strolled up to my husband waiting outside and preened.  I ever-so-slyly walked in front of him – just to see if he’d notice my new do, thinking I’d pull one over on him.  Instead, to my horror, he uttered, “Why does your hair at the bottom look so dark…and shiny…and fake?”

What???

Outdoor lighting
Looks different in outdoor lighting?

Was this a case of color-bait-and-switch — like when you buy the perfect shade of nude lipstick at the department store, only to realize that your lips look cotton-candy pink when you step outdoors?  Or was this just my husband being ultra-particular?

Like any good (and crazy) beauty sleuth, I decided to find out…by asking 100 strangers if they could tell my hair was fake.

After prepping my purchase with hairspray to dull that “shiny” look, I grabbed Kristin, marched into the middle of Boston’s “tourist central,” and had her stop poor, unsuspecting pedestrians to “ask a question about my friend’s hair.”

no-hair
After the final tally, I felt vindicated.  Only 11 people out of 100 said they could tell I was wearing clip-in extensions – and honestly, I think it was less than that, since Kristin was pressing them pretty hard (she wanted people to say “yes”).  But even so, I’m comfortable with one in 10 odds.

Judge for yourself!  And let me know in the comments below — would you wear clip-in extensions if no one would notice?

I thought they looked really nice! I love this kind of clip in hair and wear it when I can. Love it! Although the Paves hair does look better than the cheaper stuff…

  4. Hi Munali-

Great questions. Since the ones I had were synthetic, they would last forever (as long as you don't use any tools on them — they're not meant for curling irons or flat irons). Extensions made of real hair can last just as long, but you need to make sure you take care of them (wash them, don't overuse hot tools, etc.)

While extensions can help make your own hair look longer, if you get a good cut with lots of layers (since your hair is so curly), it will really make a difference in how they look.

    Hope this helps!!

I use to wear hairuwear extensions all of the time. I mean daily. Some knew, some didn't. I would switch it up from a short pony to a Britney Spears fall back to back. It was so much fun!

  8. Our website offers a wide variety of hair extensions, including human hair extensions, clip-in hair extensions, hair extension kits and hair extension accessories.

You can only spot the extensions if you really stare…and are told what you are looking for.

Hi Thomas! Gigi asked people to look at my hair (I did a twirl so people could see all around). She then asked if they could tell I was wearing clip in extensions.

So it was a very leading question, and we still only got 11 "yeses." As for the color, maybe it's because the hair is synthetic. Not really sure why.

  11. Hi,

    Great test.

I'm supprised at the difference in color from the indoor to the outdoor lighting though.

What excaxtly did you ask people on the street?

The style and length blend nicely with your hair. I'm thinking if it looks this good in outdoor light, it's the perfect accessory for going out when you want to spice up your look.

I don't think it looks bad, but I'm not sure that it looks completely natural…
