Beauty Experiment: Day Rainew by April Rain Skin Science

June 23, 2009 by Anne Houseman No Comment

aprilrainAt BeautyXposé, we’re always a tad skeptical when we get a product claiming to cure or drastically reduce wrinkles and crevices (we prefer to think of them as the result of time-honored triumphs, thank you). So when we received Day Rainew® by April Rain Skin Science, we paused after reading that independent lab studies found its proprietary collagen-boosting ingredients, HydroPeptide®, reduced fine lines and wrinkles by as much as 63 percent in just 30 days.

As our duty to you, dear readers, we enlisted the help of a FOB (Friend of BeautyXposé) to help us put the product to our own “independent test.”

What it Does
day rainewAccording to the brand, Day Rainew is like a multivitamin for the skin, supplying a recommended daily quota (RDQ) of key elements that shield skin from wrinkle-causing free radicals.   Day Renew is “powered by 29.5 HydroPeptide-DR and 16 high-performance super antioxidants…your answer to achieving younger-looking, energized, healthy skin.”

The company says these ingredients are designed to defend against sun damage and environmental elements while promoting skin cell regeneration. They say that in independent clinical studies, Day Rainew’s ingredients produced a 350 percent improvement on wrinkles compared to a placebo, fine lines and wrinkles were reduced by as much as 63 percent in 30 days, and the deep wrinkle surface area demonstrated a maximum reduction of 98 percent in 56 days.

The packaging is very unique – it looks like a big blue Hershey’s kiss (which we’re sure is really supposed to be a rain drop or a dew drop, but hey, that was our first thought).  Did we mention we’re suckers for cute packaging?

Ooh – the accompanying note says that Desperate Housewives creator, Marc Cherry, personally requested the Rainew collection for all the cast, and the ladies will be trying out the products until they return mid-July for season six!  That’s a great endorsement…or is it?  After second thought, it sounds like they haven’t actually used the products yet.

Reality Check

After ogling the packaging and reading the accompanying literature, our tester actually began using Day Rainew.  She reports that the moisturizer is very thick, luxurious and creamy, but it’s not greasy; it seems to dry quickly when applied.  It also lacks a strong fragrance, which is a plus in her book, as she’s not a fan of perfumed products.  Day Rainew worked well to hydrate her sensitive skin without irritating it or creating an oily texture.

Remember that distinctive packaging?  Apparently it’s not as practical as it is cute.  It’s not convenient for traveling (it’s very large and pointy, so it didn’t fit in our tester’s cosmetic travel bag), and because of the shape of the lid, it’s a bit tricky to keep in one spot, as it tends to roll around.

The Bottom Line
Did Day Rainew actually reduce our tester’s wrinkles?  Well that depends on who you ask.  According to her husband, there’s no major change.  But after a full month of using Day Rainew, our tester herself sees a difference in her skin.  She thinks her face is looking “better,” and she won’t go without it.

That said, she admits she’s been taking better care of her skin overall during the testing phase.  Regardless of the exact reason why the appearance of her skin is improving, our tester is hooked. In fact, she became very distressed when she realized she left the jar behind when traveling for a week.

Get Your Own
Day Rainew is available for $95 at http://www.aprilrainskinscience.com and at select retail locations around the country.

If you decide to purchase the product yourself, there’s no need to wonder how you got such glowing, hydrated skin – just blame it on the rain.
