Far from Second Best: Cor Silver Soap

Cor The Silver Soap Soaps Only Family Shot
These days, silver might not mean second place for much longer.

A facial soap that promises to cleanse, even skin tone, moisturize, diminish fine lines and wrinkles, and provide UV protection? It even sounds like a top finalist! But that’s not exactly why Cor’s Silver Soap features patented nano-silver particles as a main active ingredient — silver has long been recognized for its antibacterial benefits, too.

“A perfect fit,” says founder Jennifer McKinley, “for those with busy, active lifestyles,” the soap is intended to reduce the amount of time and money we usually spend on our skin care. With a milder pH level than most soaps (Cor’s is 7.2, and says others are around 10) it’s suitable for all skin types and is less harsh on your skin.

To apply, you work up a lather with the bar in your hands — it foams quickly — and apply the suds to your skin in a circular motion. The instructions suggest leaving the foam on your face for one to two minutes during the first week of use; after that you should be able to reduce the length of time. For blemished skin and breakouts (me!) the instructions suggest leaving the lather on for up to five minutes, but absolutely no longer.

Normally all-in-ones feel disappointing (and impersonal), but the thorough instructions alone dispelled my fears. The soap is barely fragranced — a comfort to sensitive skin — and left me feeling smoother than many other cleansers I’ve tried. The instructions warn your skin might become a little tight while it “adjusts” to the soap, a grace period of transition I’ve seen in other skin products focused on pH balancing. My skin didn’t “adjust” (this time), but be warned, it happens.

This high foaming cleanser might look like a bar of complementary hotel soap, but it’s loaded with powerful ingredients (all of them natural and FDA approved, according to Cor) like collagen, to promote skin elasticity; chitosan, to even skin tone; and sericin, to hold in moisture. Our good friends aloe and vitamins A, C, D and E also make appearances.

Suggested usage is two times a day, but sensitive skin should take it easier, especially in the dry winter season. Summer might be a different story, but if your skin is particularly dry, don’t plan on giving your moisturizer the boot any time soon. As for the wrinkle-reducing promise, I’m not convinced that the soap made much of a difference.

Still, Cor’s bar is innovation in the works, and I’m excited to see what they come out with next. Get your own bar of the Silver Soap online at Cor — a full size bar is $125 and should last for six months; a sample sliver is available for $14 and will last for around two and a half weeks.
