Worth its Weight: Goldwell DualSense Color Shampoo and Conditioner

Sometimes my hair salon whoring ways get me in trouble.  Case in point — the last time I went to a new stylist at my favorite salon back home (Rochester, NY), I asked for pretty, subtle, peek-a-boo highlights à la Rachel Weisz.  What I got were bright blond highlights resembling “The Bride of Frankenstein,” according to my father and snicker-stifling husband.  Oops.

However, that trip to the salon wasn’t a total loss — the same stylist who thinks bright blond stripes on brown hair looks “subtle” has surprisingly-solid sense when it comes to caring for color-treated hair.  When asked what she uses, she emphatically proclaimed she swears by Goldwell DualSenses shampoo and conditioner.  Being the avid beauty product hunter that I am, I snatched up the last two bottles in the salon.

And it’s a good thing I did.  While I’ve always been pretty skeptical about color-saving products, Goldwell DualSenses have worked wonders on keeping my post-disaster fixed hair* (thank you, Natural Instincts!) a pretty shade of medium brown until now, after two months of environmental abuse.  In fact, that’s the premise behind the entire product line — to provide defense against the daily factors (read: sun) that stress color-treated hair.  Anti-oxidative pomegranate extract and UV-filters boost this protection while intensifying the color’s brilliance.

Both DualSenses shampoo and conditioner require very little product to work, which is fantastic, because even though they’re not too extravagantly-priced (they’re about $13 each), it’s always good when you can stretch your dollar.  Just a dollop of the shampoo will suds up to a nice foam when you wet your hair, and the conditioner glides on smoothly without feeling overly-heavy.

Have I mentioned how much I love the smell?  I’m head over heels for it.  Officially the company says it smells like this:

“Fruity lively top note of lychee, blackberry, watermelon and raspberry with a flowery middle note of caring lily of the valley and lime-tree blossom on a woody base note.”

My untrained nose think it smells like grapefruit.  Either way, it’s heavenly.

After drying and styling, it’s clear this line is ideal for normal hair – it’s not weighty, but it does retain the perfect level of moisture needed for drier strands.  If you’re looking for a super boost of moisture, Goldwell also offers DualSenses in “Extra Rich” for coarser, dry hair.

So while my salon trip didn’t turn out exactly the way I planned, I don’t regret it at all.  Now I’ve found a fix to keep my color lasting longer — exactly the way it’s meant to be.

*For those of you wondering why I didn’t have the stylist fix the dye job, it was because of a series of several unfortunate factors:  I didn’t notice how bright the highlights were until I walked outside the salon into sunlight; I was the last appointment for the day for a holiday weekend; and the salon was closed until after I needed to go back home to Boston.  I’m sure the stylist would have fixed it if she knew there was a problem at all, so I wish no ill will toward her or the salon and will be back at some point.
