i turned myself orange mverno@roadrunner.com
I bought one of those store-bought lotions and it turned my legs bright orange for weeks! Just in time for the annual family reunion!
I had a big event coming up and wanted to look tanned and healthy…and beautiful. I used a self-tanner on my body and face, knowing I would look great! The next morning my hands(between the fingers) were a lovely shade of orange and my face looked splotchy with dirt.
I tried soap and water, alchohol, even baking soda to remove “my tan”….to no avail. I skipped the event.
Thank you.
I used a sunless tanner lotion in the mid 90’s and it turned my skin burnt orange!
I only recently started using sunless tanner, and I’ve been careful! But this would help me from making mistakes too!
I always hated going to fake-bake, so I figured I’d get some tinned lotion to darken my pale skin- I didn’t want to walk into my important business meeting looking like a snowman. Without thinking, I went to Wal-mart and grabbed the first lotion I found, which happened to be the darkest shade they had!
After applying the lotion, I was suspicious of the dark liquid I was rubbing into my skin, but since I was new to this method of tanning, I thought this might be a part of the process.
I wasn’t a snowman during that meeting, and I turned out to be an African princes- my skin was as dark as the night was long! I was sooo embarrassed and never touched another lotion since!
In high school we were having track photos taken for the yearbook the next day, so my friend and I used self tanner for the first time. Needless to say, our photos looked horrible. Very orange streaks!
i put too much on my nose so my WHOLE nose was orange, nothing else!
too many too count. orange streaks on my legs. forgetting to wash my hands and having orange palms forever. i never have gotten it right except to wear disposable gloves
I HAVE WOULD UP WITH A WHITE SKUNK STRIP DOWN THE BACK OF MY LEGS
hands fingers elbows orange- streaks on face and huge white marks on back of thighs back when my thighs were tiny mrs.mommyyatgmaildotocm
Well I foolishly turned myself as orange as an oompa-loompa. I then spent hours in the bath trying to scrub the nasty streaks away…only to end up with orange colored ring around the tub.
I had orange palms for weeks! LOL
When I was in high school I had put a self tanner and bronzer on before I went to school. Well half way through the day I went to the bathroom and I noticed that when I put it on I didn’t apply it ALL over my face…I missed my nose and my neck so I looked super weird. It was so embarassing and I couldn’t go home!
I’ve never tried a self tanner, so this would be a first for me.
I would love to try this most all I have used either streaks
bad or the color is not good. Thanks
I decided to treat myself to a Mystic Tan spray-on tan. The attendant explained everything to me, and I thought I could handle the process. But when I got in the booth, I found it impossible to hold my breath while remembering to turn and move my arms and legs the right way. My resulting tan was streak-free and beautiful– but the bronchitis I developed was a nightmare. I was literally coughing up green stuff for weeks! Never again…
Turned me very orange and very streaky!
i tried putting makeup on my face to look tanner but i was very white at the time so it looed very weird…
i went to the pool with some shorts on and i layed on the chairs for a couple hours and i got a “shorts tan”
Talk about a TRAUMATIC TRUE STORY – Here’s a really Olde-Time method for self-tanning I bet few gals nowadays are familiar with, and when I was ten years old growing up in Fla in the late 60’s, my mom and I tried this method out:
You gather up about 2 gallons or so of WALNUTS out of your yard and fill up the bathtub with straight hot water. When the water has cooled down just enough to tolerate, you then immerse your naked body into this walnut filled bath water and procede to soak yourself until the hot water has gone cold.
And God forbid you accidentally gathered up any WORMY walnuts – YUK! Imagine soaking in a tub with two gallons of walnut and tiny worms floating on the top and you get the idea. Yes, it was TRAUMATIC!
Well, it worked okay for my mother who had a naturally warm skin tone. But as I am fair and freckled, I was the most disgusting shade of sickly yellow-orange you ever saw and we both vowed never to try that method again……. I wish I had a picture to share!
My most traumatic experience was way back when QT was popular. I came out streaked orange all over!
The first time that I used a self tanner I was so excited.
I took a bath and exfoliated, ran into the bedroom and applied the tanner.
In two hours I had a great tan except on my hands, elbows, knees, ankles, feet and neck and there I was the worst shade of orange that I have ever seen.
It took me weeks of scrubbing and wearing sweatpants to remove it.
I TEND TO MAKE MYSELF LOOKED STRIPED LIKE A TIGER
This would be great. I’m outside all the time. My arms are tanned, but even with shorts on my legs still look white. Please enter me, thank you
i ended up with brown splotchy places everywhere
That would basically be when I looked like an oompa-loompa. I also was an idiot and didn’t wash my hands completely clean so I ended up with orange palms as well. Later it started peeling off and I ended up with a spotted orange look – not my best moment!
My girlfriend tried out a cheapo brand and turned orange. I laughed after I left the room.
I went to give myself a tan via Neutrogena’s Sunless Spray.
Would’ve been fine, except I ended up looking like an orange Zebra. No good!
Love,
JP

i turned myself orange the day before prom! ugh!
Well, I have very sensitive skin. So, I try to use self-tanners especially on my face — as well as a high SPF lotion. Anyways, I put some self-tanner on my face and I guess it was not spread evenly. I had splotches of yellow and orange all over my face for over a week even though I tried really hard to scrub it off.
I have very senstive skin. I have to use a high SPF and try to stay out of the sun. So, I use a self-tanner on my face. One time, I guess I did not spread it evenly so it came out all blotchy and orange. I tried really hard to scrub it away but that only made it worse since only the yellow spots seemed to disappear. I had orange spots on my face for over a week. It was hiddeous.
I was going on a trip to the beach so I wanted to not be lily white. Instead I looked like a tiger.
I’m a se;f-tnner freak; I did not know there were bronzing gloves. I can’t wait to purchase them. However, I went to family doctor who was convinced that my skin coloring was due to a terminal/progressive liver disease. Not just useless and inappropriate self-tanner!!!!!!!!!!!!!Weel due to the expense/medical and the time away from work; appreciative that the yellow/streaked mixed colors came from a bottle and not the liver. This was and still lives asa nightmare from ———–”. Thanks sW
I seem to have the same story as everyone else. Yup….turned my self bright orange. Thank goodness orange looks good on me.
I have never really used a self-tanner, I’ve been too afraid. So I am super pale all the time, and my husband keeps telling me I have to try something! So if I win this, it can be my first (hopefully mistake free) foray into self-tanning!
Oh wow I want these so badly…I have had so many traumatic tanning experiences, but my worst is probably this:
It was the summer after my first year of college and my friend was having a pool party with all of my friends from high school, including my ex boyfriend. I am super pale (like sick-looking pale) and I was like, there’s no WAY I am wearing a bathing suit being this pale, and I can’t real tan because I just burn. So I used the self tanner, and I thought it looked pretty good, if a little orangey. So I get to the party and am in my bathing suit, when one of the girls points out and says “What happened to your legs?” I had big messy streaks ALL over the back of my legs so you could totally tell I fake tanned. Then of course my ex had to tease me and be mean, and I was just so embarassed because then everyone knew it was fake!
I really need a good tanning experience!
i went to get the spray tan a couple days before my wedding because the back of my dress was all open an it was october so i was really white well when i got in the both to get sprayed and it started before i was ready an i still had on my bra when i noticed it was to late i opened my mouth not thinking an got sprayed in the mouth . so on my wedding day i had a huge white strap mark across my back it was terrible i tell ya
I don’t have any overly traumatic story – just the usual orange/uneven. I’d love to try these though!
A VERY CLOSE FAMILY FRIEND’S WEDDING WAS APPROACHING! MYSELF AND ALL HER COUSINS DECIDED TO GO TO HOLLYWOOD TANS, THE SPRAY TAN STAND UP MACHINE PEOPLE, YEAH…..APPARENTLY THERE IS A VIDEO FOR YOU TO WATCH, BUT THE GIRL BEHIND THE COUNTER CARED MORE ABOUT HER STAR MAGAZINE! WE HAD FIGURED TO RUB THE TINT IN, BUT DID NOT KNOW THAT THERE WAS A NUDEY TAN-DANCE YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO INSIDE THE MACHINE TO MAKE IT SPRAY EVENLY AND THAT IT TOOK 8 HOURS TO SET EITHER, WE LOOKED GREAT WITH OUR STREAKY ORANGE SKINTONE AND PEPTO-COLORED BRIDESMAID DRESSES! WISH WE COULD POST PICS TOO!
At my High School graduation, I had used self-tanner the night before and awoke to streaky legs! Streaky orange legs, I looked like an alien was wearing my cap and gown. We scrambled to try and fix it, and I ended up looking today at graduation, with an obvious fake glow.
These mitts sound awesome! Thanks!
I wore white shorts after applying self tanner to my legs. I looked all dingy and dirty just on the bottom of my shorts……hmmmm real discreet!
I only tried it once and ended up with huge streaks on my legs.
I had horrible zebra stripes
I worked in a tanning salon and had to spray tan people. I was really bad at it. I had virtually no training but my title was “airbrush technichian”. I made a fair skined girl VERY spotting on the day before her wedding. There was no way to even it out.
i am very pale naturally but i always want to look tan during summer season. last year i decided to use sunless spray tanner…. it looked invisble when i sprayed it on my body, so i kept spraying and spraying while in my bathroom…. In the morning, i woke up and decided to go to the bathroom to check on my tan. First thing a saw, was that my light green rug turned bright orange (and i mean like an orange fruit)… Horrified, i looked in the mirror- and fair enough, i had bright orange streaks all over my arms and legs…. Since it was hot out already, there was no way to mask these streaks under layers of clothes. No scrubs and no soap could get rid of my fabulous tan for weeks…
In high school i tried a self tanner but ended up streaked orange with orange hands – i looked like a freak
Have had orange hands, feet, orange funny marks between my toes. Unfortunately it doesn’t show up right away, only when it is too late to do anything about it!
My legs and arms looked okay but my hands were bright orange afterwards which made it even more noticable.
I applied tanning lotion before I went to bed and the next morning I rushed to work, when I looked down at my arms it looked like I was a badly burned in a fire. Thanks for the chance!
In the 80s we would use self tanners and then we would turn out orange – and the palms of our hands as well – YUCK!
My worst tanning experience was actually in a tanning bed and not sunless tanning. I was 14 and the gym I went to had a tanning bed in the women’s locker room. I had never done tanning before but it was the “cool” thing to do when I was that age. I’m blond hair and blue eyed and had almost no color to my skin. The kid that was running the front desk at the gym and she didn’t know how long it should be set for. So we decided that 20 minutes sounded about right. In reality I should have been in for 3-4 minutes tops, I got so hot I ended up coming out after about 12 minutes but by then it was too late. I got so badly burned I had to go to the ER. That was the end of my tanning forays. So now I just use self tanner!
nice!
I had never tanned before and used a product that turned me orange! I had to go to class like that. Good times, good times.
I never used any before and thought I had to put it on really thick and I was looking like a pumpkin!
My worst story was not realizing I had missed huge parts on my back. So I went out in my swimsuit and everyone starting laughing and I looked in the mirror and I had huge gaps in where the tanning was and wasn’t including finger marks from where I had tried to spread it out on my back.
My girlfriend did self tanning for the first time. We woke up the next morning and the sheets were covered with orange dye and I had spots of the tanning stuff on me.
i was going to a party where this guy I liked was going to be so I had my sister apply self tanning to me, all over. Checked it out thought I looked good and decided to go to bed. Got up the next day took a shower lazed around till it was time to get ready for the party. I put on a cute outfit went to pick up my friend, thinking I looked hot and tanned. When come to find out I was so splotchy and orange tinted I couldn’t leave the house for more than a week. Never did try that again.
I did what everyone did when self tanners first came on the market. I managed to turn myself bright orange the night I was going out on a big date. It was pretty mortifying to say the least.
I applied a self tanner to my face and I looked like someone from another
planet when it set in.My face looked like the sunset
I got one that not only turned me orange but broke me out in hives. I was an itchy mess.
I ended up with orange knees, elbow, and hands.
My most traumatic self-tanner experience was when I used too much product and my hands turned orange. =0(
I didn’t wear any Thursday and niw have dead skin on both shoulders with a weird mark on my chest.
My friend did it about 10 yrs ago back in high school… she turned ORANGE and had so many SPOTS all over her body!!
~Especially her face and arms~
Poor Paige!
i tried self tanner once and looked like an oompa loompa that was it for me
I added iodine to baby oil and laid out in the sun. All I did was burn.
I’ve never tried one before so I don’t have a story to tell. I would like to try though
Well, I was young and averse to reading directions, so I didn’t know you were supposed to wash your hands after putting the bottle tan on the bod. My hands were tan for quite a while…
I went to a big parade and when I got home I saw that there were long drips down the back of both of my legs.
I always use bronzer/self-tanner in the summer. Once I got caught in a rainstorm and it all melted onto my white shoes. Gross!
God, right before my wedding I got a spray tanner from a drug store nd tried to use it, I am VERY pale so it ended up making me orange and blotchy- it was horrible, I ended up getting the alteration lady throw together some sleves for my dress to match (like a see through white tulle) you couldn’t tell unless you saw my hands- i cried and cried!!
thanks so much for the chance to win this!
I have to say that my most traumatic self-tanner experience really isn’t anything we all haven’t experienced before. It just embarrassed me. I once had a date with this really hot amazing guy, It was, if I remember correctly a Saturday night in early August long before I was married. I had really wanted to go out with this guy and when he finally asked me to go out for dinner I was so excited. He asked me a week in advance because we couldn’t coordinate our schedules to get together sooner so I knew I had a week to get myself spiffed up for the date. So since I was working full time and getting real sun was not going to happen for that whole week I used a self tanner. Well, long story short, I had great color, no complaints there. I didn’t turn orange, I didn’t streak or anything like that. But what I didn’t realize, was how bad my skin smelled. I guess I had gotten so used to it, it didn’t bother me as much as perhaps someone who had never smelled the after effects of self tanner before, and some apparently like mine, can be nasty, lol! So, we have a nice dinner on our date, and again long story short, when the night was over and he leaned in to give me a nice goodnight kiss, he said, what the H**L is that awful smell, I have been smelling it all night! I was mortified beyond belief, I thought I had died, I was so embarrassed. I had put cologne on before we went out but apparently it had worn off and all “he” could smell was my fake tan, yikes! Okay, so now you know! Thanks for letting me share it with you all.
My most tramautic self-tanning experience was before my best friend’s wedding when I first started self-tanning. I had been at the beach recently and I had tan lines. The bridesmaids dress for the wedding was strapless, so I felt that this was the perfect opportunity to try my new self-tanner. I very carefully applied my self-tanner where my tan lines were. I stayed very still while it dried and thought I had done the right thing. Unfortunately, at this point, I did not understand the concept of blending. Needless to say, I was the only bridesmaid with reverse tan lines.
I always wanted to be a model and one day I made friends with a man named Antonio who was a professional photographer and artist. His artistic photography stunned me. It was beautiful. All his models had sparkling eyes and creamy coco skin with a golden tint. As I commented notably on every picture in his collection, he offered me the opportunity to work with him on his next shoots. I agreed immediately. As soon as I got home I started searching the net for San Francisco’s best tanning saloons. Not only was I searching for the perfect tan, but also some places with reasonable prices. I read the reviews on some that I found interesting, then made my choice. There weren’t as many reviews on my choice but the ones that were there were excellent. The prices looked just about right too. When I got there I was greeted by friendly young man with a slight tan on him. The place was kind of small but still had a good vibe to it, and I noticed I was the only one there. He led me to a room where I laid down in under a UV Bed. When I got out my skin looked a little reddish, barely at all different from the color I went in with. I wanted BIG, noticeable… I was thinking “sex symbol”, so I insisted he let me do the spray tan after my skin would cool a little. When I was done with that I took a look in the mirror and my jaw instantly dropped. I looked amazing! My skin looked just like I wanted. Creamy, golden, gleaming, smooth, and classic. Eagerly looking at the cracks of light through the curtains, I finally stepped outside. Ready to show the world my new look. Instantly, I was blinded by the light outside and then, I saw something horrible. Something that made me want to resort to life as a cave woman and live in isolation forevermore. My skin was orange, no less orange than an orange itself. I realized there was no turning back so I tried calming myself down by telling myself things like “Nah, it’s just the light”, “In a couple hours the color will cool down”, and “It’s just different, it’s not bad, I’m not used to it yet..” Deep inside I knew all that was garbage. I looked like a carrot, and soon I began to feel like one too. On my way home I took the bus and got stared at. One girl went so far as to blatantly yell out, “Gir you’re like orange!” I was so embarrassed. It had been a horrible day. As I sat in front of the mirror desperately, my phone rang. It was Antonio. My jaw dropped again. In a moment of such shock and so little time for logical thought, I agreed to doing the shoot. I proceeded to try to cool myself down with previous garbage. When the shoot came I was still orange. I was so glad when it was over. It was SUCH an embarrassing experience. When I saw the pictures, right away I wished I would’ve pursued my first idea of becoming a cave woman. I looked like a nervous orange wreck. Every single picture. Antonio never called again, and neither did I. That was the end of my “modeling” career, and boy, did my ego go down.
& that was my nightmare,
Sincerely,
Karina!
