Ask BX: How Can I Manage My Frizzy Hair?

Did You Hear About the Morgan New York premiere

Dear BX,

How about for frizzy hair days – suggestions?

-Joan B.

Dear Joan,

Don’t let frizzing get you frazzled! While you might think that frizzy hair is your foe, let’s look at the bright side: Your hair has got movement, and we can definitely work with that.

Blow-drying and/or straightening your “situation” can be hot, heavy and time consuming. Not to mention, both require a lot of handiwork. And who has time for that in the average morning? We certainly don’t, and we’re guessing that you don’t either.

Thankfully, most curling irons can heat up in about the same time it takes to drink a cup of coffee or apply some makeup. Unlike straighteners, using a curling iron allows you to control the friction of the contact between it and your hair by wrapping it around the barrel – no tugging, ripping, or yanking required.

No time to shower? No problem! Rub some dry shampoo in your hair. You can also apply a thermal protection product (like John Frieda’s Frizz-Ease Hair Serum, $9) to help add a little gloss before the styling begins.

When you’re on the go, you really only need to pay attention to the hair pieces that are framing your face. Your ears are a great reference point – starting at the beginning of your hairline and the base of your ears, glide your fingers about three inches toward the back of your head (or further if you have the time, energy and/or inclination) and then move upward, scooping up your face framing pieces, until your fingers reach at the top. Pull the rest of your hair into a ponytail for now, and divide your framing pieces into large one inch sections.

Wrap each section of hair around the barrel of the curling iron starting in the middle of your length and hold for about 10 seconds. Be careful not to roll too close to your scalp and don’t hold for too long! When the important part is done, you can divide your pontytailed hair into much larger (and therefore less time consuming) sections and quickly curl them too, but you don’t need to hold them for as long – no one will see much of them anyway!

You can reinforce the smooth waves with your finger, or mess them up if they feel too defined. Add a spritz of hair spray to make your sleek look last all day, and off you go!
