From over-the-top dazzling to sweetly demure, the stars attending the 2010 MTV Movie Awards exhibited their own personal style statements. Of course, we couldn’t leave such stunning makeup looks secret for very long, so we’re helping you get “made” to look like Katy Perry and Whitney Port, featuring makeup tips straight from the pros who dolled them up.
Katy Perry
There’s no denying that Katy Perry’s electric blue wig and barely-there dress stole the spotlight at the MTV Movie Awards, but we were also pretty impressed with her sharply-lined cat eyes and her fantastic neon yellow nails.
To keep Katy’s look balanced yet bold, celebrity makeup artist Jake Bailey said he focused on making a statement with her eyes by using COVERGIRL Line Exact in Black. “I love liquid liner because it allows you to change the shape of an eye, [and] we wanted to create a more almond shape for Katy,” he said. To make the black liner stand out even more, Bailey added white from COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Onyx Smoke directly above it. In her waterline (the area rimming the inside of your eyes before the lashes begin), Bailey applied the new COVERGIRL LiquiLineBlast in Silver Spark to make the eyes pop.
“Women tend to be afraid to use liner in the inner eye,” explained Bailey, “but it actually balances out a dramatic eye look.” To finish off Katy’s eyes, he applied multiple coats of COVERGIRL LashBlast Fusion in Very Black.
As for the neon yellow nails Katy Perry rocked, a little birdie told us that celebrity manicurist Kimmie Kyees used China Glaze Yellow Polka Dot Bikini on ibd Natural Nail Tips for her first manicure of the show (she later sported pink nails).
To get the truest, boldest hue of the yellow polish, Kyees used a well-known manicurist trick by first applying a couple coats of China Glaze White on White underneath. And with that, she really nailed it.
Whitney Port
“The City” star Whitney Port was another star who went the bold-liner route, although the rest of her look was more demure. Her makeup artist at the event, Amy Nadine, opted to make Whitney’s liner the only stand-out feature, so her makeup look wouldn’t compete with her Yigal Azrouel dress.
Nadine began Whitney’s eye-popping transformation by smudging the lighter shade of COVERGIRL Smoky ShadowBlast in Bronze Fire all over her lid, then contouring her crease with the darker shade.Nadine says she drew a thick, heavy line on Whitney’s upper eyelid with COVERGIRL LiquiLine in Black Fire for a “60s Madmen-inspired eye,” paired with extra coats of COVERGIRL LastBlast Fusion in Very Black on the top lashes. COVERGIRL LashBlast Length in Very Black on Whitney’s bottom lashes added definition.
To create a smooth, natural look on the rest of Whitney’s face, Nadine applied Giorgio Armani Face Fabric Radiance in #1 and Giorgio Armani Micro-Fil Loose Powder in #0. She then sculpted her cheeks with COVERGIRL Simply Ageless Sculpting Blush in Plush Peach on the apples of her cheeks, and she finished the look with lips glazed with Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Lip Tar in Hush.
