When a trend is born from a Chanel classic, you know it’s not only going to be beyond chic, but it’s bound to be inherently timeless, too. This season, the iconic label’s most recognized piece, the chain link purse, inspired almost every designer (from Fendi to Forever 21) to create their own masterpieces with both dramatic and/or subtle differences from the original infamous bag. Alas! The house of Chanel hanging on our shoulders.

The most dramatic interpretations have come in the form of gigantic color-blocked leather bags with oversized chain link straps. Whatever tone, texture, shape or shade tickles your fancy, the chain link tote is the perfect alternative to your boring company logo satchel or nylon gym duffle. If you’re worried the oversized links are a bit too much shoulder shimmer, try a bag with fabric braided through the chain for a tamer look.

At night, the standard lengthy chain link purse is the perfect accoutrement to your sexy mini dress or blouse and high-waisted skirt. While swinging it over one shoulder the traditional way works just fine, don’t be afraid to drape it diagonally across your body — the chain doubling as your purse strap and a fantastic piece of jewelry. Hint: To get the most evening looks from your links, choose a purse with a fold over front so you can wear it the chain long or wrap it around the flap for a shorter, more conservative shoulder bag.
