Season Staple: Nauticals

We might not have a 15-foot luxury yacht docked in the South of France, but at least this season we can dress like it. Nauticals — navy stripes, anchors and all stuff sailor — are making quite the splash for spring. Inspired by the French, embraced by Ralph Lauren and forever loved by the preps who religiously rock it, this youthful yet sophisticated maritime look is a definite must have.

To sport nauticals in the most classic sense, tuck a navy striped t-shirt into a pair of fitted white shorts, or throw a navy blazer with gold buttons over your crisp white button down. If you’re looking to strictly accessorize with sailor duds, go with tiny anchor or sailboat post earrings or a tote bag decked out in a nautical collaboration (stripes, anchors and boats, oh my!).

No fear, though, if you’re a gal who likes to dress on the edge, but indulge in the trends. You don’t need to say au revoir to your funky style to dive into nauticals. Try more uniquely designed pieces that follow the nautical trend, like a navy striped long sleeve mini or oversized pocket t-shirt. If you want to pump up the volume on the basics, pile gaudy gold jewelry over that conservative fitted blazer or step into a sky-high black pump for a naughty nautical look.

But while we have l’amour for the sailor look, we certainly don’t want to go overboard. Use your editing eye! Stick with one nautical piece per outfit — a boatneck striped sweater or a costumey anchor necklace or a wedge with blue and red detailing. You want to stay all the rage, but still refined.
