Season Staple: Ruffles

67th Annual Golden Globe Awards - Arrivals

As any fashionista knows, the first months of the year are only good for a few things: an opportunity to wear faux fur, the Barney’s Warehouse Sale, and award shows. Last week, the Golden Globes proved once more that the best place to track the hottest trends is right on the red carpet. According to Hollywood’s elite, this time around, ruffles are all the rage.

“Up in the Air” star and Best Supporting Actress nominee Anna Kendrick wore an embroidered Marchesa gown with a ruffle style that almost anyone can rock. While the oversized structured ruffle on her shoulder certainly makes a statement, the asymmetry allows the dress to speak, not scream. Also, the subtle ruffle on the hem adds cohesion, expertly completing the look. For your own night on the town, a top with the same silhouette paired with skinny jeans or tucked into a mini can be the perfect evening ensemble. Stay clear of chunky necklaces and load up on bangles and giant costume rings.

Delicate ruffle detailing was also a huge hit on the red carpet. Best Performance by an Actress nominee Emily Blunt’s Dolce and Gabanna gown had tiny ruffles peaking on the bodice and spiraling down the body of the dress. The few larger ruffles on the train gave the gown a wispy flare, but color and fabric choice still kept it looking clean. A knee length pencil skirt in a dark brown or black with the same spiral ruffles can be a chic office or evening piece, especially paired with your best sky-high pumps.

But while Anna Kendrick and Emily Blunt did their ruffles right, Christina Hendricks of “Mad Men” fame did her ruffles oh so wrong. It looks like the super heavy ruffle on her Christian Siriano number was supposed to hide the widest part of her body, but instead it brings way too much unflattering attention to it. This kind of ruffle design works much better on a mini dress for a mini person.
