1. Your clothes will take you much further than you expected. There are pieces in my closet that I haven’t even touched yet. Yes this makes sense because I have more clothing items than there are days in the month, but I am still shocked. Even simple pieces, like a simple black T can drastically change the feel of the other pieces it is paired with. I’m not good at math, but based on my very scientific equations…I could (key word being COULD) last forever and not shop again because I would be set for every occasion ever.
2. Just because you always wear a piece one way doesn’t mean it’s the only way to wear it. Take a step out of your fashion comfort zone and mix up your normal outfit pairings. I don’t normally belt cardigans or pair cardigans with button ups, but I have done both this month twice and loved the look. You’d be surprised how creative you can get, so go ahead and try.
3. The mirror lies. Asking the mirror on the wall if you are the fairest maiden of them all isn’t always the safest bet. Depending on the glass in the mirror and the angle of the mirror, your outfit and body can look different. Taking photos helped me realize which pieces don’t flatter my body the way I thought they did (aka I am considering never wearing them again). But just like mirrors, we all know cameras can play tricks. So your best bet is a triple whammy: mirror, photo and asking a loving, yet honest, friend to tell you if those new skinny jeans really make you look skinny.
4. Whether or not you realize it, you have a personal style uniform. Apparently, I wear a lot more “T-shirt/tank top with a cardigan, jean and boots” outfits than I ever noticed. But hey, it’s a good uniform, because it flatters my body (if I do say so myself). Taking photos of your outfits will help you realize what works best together and what works best with your body. It will also help you realize which outfits are your favorites since you can go back and look at yourself from an (almost) third-party perspective. Hindsight is 20/20 after all.
5. So that’s what I look like to other people?! Again with me vouching for gratuitous self-portraits. Photos help you really LOOK at your body and accept what you have to work with. We all have a slightly warped perception of what we look like. The more time we spend looking at it in photos (the view of someone you would pass on the street), the easier it is for us to realize just how we really look. In my mind, my stomach was much more prominent (Um, hello? It’s not.) and my thighs were a bit more thunderous. At this point I am almost immune to my own photos. Come on Stacey and Clinton — bring on the 360! I am all about self-awareness right now!
