I hate when people ask where I’m from … which is a standard “getting to know you” question. I never know what to say, because we moved a few times when I grew up. While I graduated from high school in Michigan and my parents still live there, I only lived there for two years, and I only go back once a year at Christmas time. I was born in Virginia, but we moved to Germany less than a year later. I lived in West Virginia the longest (10 years), but we moved after 5th grade, and I don’t remember most of it. That leads me to Connecticut … the only place aside from Boston that I consider “home.” We lived there from 6th grade to the end of 10th, so only about five years. I consider it home because it was my favorite place we lived, and I think of those five years as some of the most formative in a kid’s life.
While I’ve lived only three hours away from this town for the past six years, I barely ever make it down there. I always say “next month,” and we all know how that works out. Next thing you know … it’s the next year. I had been playing the “next month” game this whole year, and I finally decided it was time to end this stupid game. Last weekend, the BF and I packed up the car … with ourselves … and drove down for a quick day trip.
I was so excited for a few main reasons. First off, my BF has never been to my “home town.” We just never got around to it since my family doesn’t live there any more. Secondly, my childhood best friend still lives there, and I barely get to see her. Last but not least, the town is really woodsy, and I LOVE a good frolic through the woods. Add on the beautiful Fall colors this time of year, and I was more or less bouncing up and down during the entire three-hour car ride.
It was so nice to drive around town, visiting my old stomping grounds and sharing stories/memories. I snapped a few (hundred) photos during our hike around the town “pond” – I think it’s really a lake – and wanted to share some of my favorites with you here …
I can’t wait to head back for other Connecticut day trips! There are so many things we could have done if we had the time. I want to go during the Summer sometime so we can going swimming in this pond and the other big lake in town.
Where are some of your favorite places to go on day trips?
