Beautiful Boston: Endurance Pilates and Yoga Studio

A couple of weekends ago, I met up with a bunch of fabulous local bloggers at a three-month old yoga and pilates studio in the South End – Endurance Pilates and Yoga.

endurance pilates and yoga studioWe were greeted by the fabulous and energetic owner Julie Erickson. After a quick introduction, she whisked us down a flight of stairs (covered in leopard-print carpet) to the intimate studio for an hour-long sample in which we rotated through pilates, barre and yoga exercises. After, she talked us through the TRX and kettlebell classes she offers in addition and then we took a turn on the reformers. Surprisingly, they are way more fun and less intimidating than I originally thought.

endurance pilates and yoga studioAfter breaking a sweat, we noshed on the tasty treats Julie and her team put out for us while she told us more about her story and her practice. Julie has been teaching for 20 years, and it shows in her practice. Julie was recently named Boston Magazine’s Best Of Boston® 2014 Personal Trainer!

endurance pilates and yoga studioJulie has an amazing story – as the daughter of a double-amputee, she saw how important core strength was to those learning to walk on prosthetics. It was because of this personal experience that Julie was inspired to work with some of the Marathon bombing survivors (pro bono, I might add). It was beyond touching to hear her talk about how pilates has allowed the survivors to take control of their lives again.

Julie generously gifted each blogger in attendance with a free one-on-one session. I can’t wait to get back in the studio and work out on the TRX and reformers with her help. I’ll let you know how it goes and if I make it out in one piece 🙂 And good news for you ClassPassers, you can sign up for Endurance classes in the app!

Are you in to yoga and pilates?

Kennedy's On The Square

Beautiful Boston: Kennedy’s on the Square

As you know from reading this, I love all things beauty. Makeup, skin care, nail polish, clothing … the list goes on. But you know what I think is equally, if not more, beautiful? A well-crafted cocktail and food I just can’t stop eating even if I’m bursting at the seams. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about.

So imagine my delight when I was invited with some of the other lovely Boston bloggers to enjoy a complimentary night of drinks, tasty treats and laughs at Kennedy’s on the Square. Located in historic Harvard Square, KOTS coins itself as a “gastropub with tantalizing cocktails & craft beers.” The interior is filled with rich leather booths and cozy, dim lighting. It’s the perfect setting in which to share gossip with your friends over a plate of grass-fed sliders and a couple of Vault martinis.

Over a couple of hours, we downed cocktails and gorged ourselves on a mix of apps, entrees and desserts. Before we get in to the food, I wanted to apologize for the lack of corresponding pictures. My camera died because I forgot to charge my battery and all the phone pictures I took turned out blurry. Once the other bloggers post their articles, I’ll link them here.

My favorite app was hands-down the grass-fed sliders, which were served on potato buns. The meat was tender, juicy and perfectly seasoned. For an entree, I enjoyed the Sausage pizza, which was equally as delicious. The crust was a bit too thin for my personal preference, but it was still amazing. The combination of lamb sausage, feta cheese, pomegranate, molasses and mint was perfection.

To round out the night, I had a bite of three desserts – the bread pudding, Nutella creme brûlée and flourless chocolate cake. All were enjoyable, but my favorite was the bread pudding. I just went back to look for a description of the bread pudding, but didn’t see it on the dessert menu, so I guess the menu changes regularly? Regardless, if you go and they are offering the bread pudding, make sure to put in an order … and then bring it to me 😉

If you can’t tell from my post, I had an amazing time and I would definitely go back. It strikes me as more of a place to go with friends for drinks and a shared meal than a place for an formal dinner, but to each their own. And you know what’s even better? There is a sister restaurant, Kennedy’s Public House, in Norwood out near me. I can go any night I please. Win, win!

If you do happen to spend some time at KOTS, come back to let me know what you thought!

Never Coast: An Afternoon at Flywheel Boston

On Saturday, I joined Gluten Free Boston Girl and a bunch of other fabulous Boston bloggers for an afternoon ass-kicking … also known as a Flywheel class. I’ll let you in on a little secret … I’m a grown woman who lives in a city and had never been to a spin class before Saturday. That’s more or less unheard of these days.

flywheel boston

Needless to say, I was terrified. Spin classes have always kind of terrified me. While I lift weights and run on the treadmill at the gym, the spin room is always dark, loud and intensely energetic. I was never sure if I had it in me. Well, I sucked up my fears and marched myself over to class on Saturday.  At first glance, you might think that Flywheel was a fitness retail store. There is a giant chalkboard with the class schedule, a wall of (complementary) spin shoes for Flywheelers to use during the class and a water fountain with both cold and room temperature water. I’m not sure who actually likes room temperature water, but who am I to judge? Just kidding, I judge all of the time.

The class was about as intense as I expected, so I held back a bit. I could have gone harder, and I regretted not when I realized I could still walk somewhat normally the next day. The stadium seating, dark lights, hot beats (who do I think I am?), instructor Rachele and the TorqBoard all make the class motivational and fun. Plus, it was great to catch up with blogger friends old and new!

And for those of you non-Bostonians, there are lots of other locations across the country. Check out the locations here.

Have any of you tried Flywheel?

cupcakes and cocktails

Cupcakes and Cocktails with Blog and Tweet Boston

This past Friday I was lucky enough to join some other fabulous members of Blog and Tweet Boston at the Boston Center for Adult Education for the Cupcakes and Cocktails class, which was taught by the one-and-only  Dustin Rennels. The cocktails were delicious, the cupcakes were scrumptious and the instructor was the icing on the (cup)cake. Pun totally intended.

To set the stage, I’ll let the BCAE explain the concept behind the class:

What’s better than drinking a delightful cocktail? Eating one! In this course, set up like a cocktail party, we’ll all take a hand in preparing such treats as: Cosmo cupcakes, brandied peach, tiramisu cupcake, sangria cupcake, strawberry daiquiri, pina colada, Jell-O Shot cupcake, etc (flavors alternate depending on the season). But first we’ll start with cupcake flavored and shaped shooters, followed by two cocktails corresponding to our seasonal liquor-laced cakes to keep up the mood. Bring a friend and get ready to get your hands dirty and your palettes sweetened!

The short version? You drink booze, you put booze in cupcake batter, you bake the cupcakes and then eat said boozy cupcakes. What more is there to know?! The only thing left to know … where to sign up, which is here.

During the three-hour session we whipped up:

  • Brandied peach cupcakes with tangy brown sugar frosting
  • Sangria cupcakes with fruit compote topping
  • Spring break cupcakes
  • Red wine spicy winter sangria
  • Apple cider hot toddy
  • Cake frosting shot

Instead of explain all of these delicacies to you, I’ll just share some mouth-watering photos instead.

That Time I Went to the (Pure) Barre

I was graciously invited to a special blogger class at Pure Barre Boston two weeks ago. I had started working out again about a week or two before the class, so I was a bit cocky heading in. I had heard that Pure Barre kicks your butt, but I thought I would be the kicker, not the kickee. Oh how wrong I was …

Pure Barre

It was a chilly day outside, and I walked up the stairs to the Pure Barre Studio all bundled up. Instead of walking into a sterile gym, walking into Pure Barre was like walking into your fabulous best friend’s apartment. It was warm and cozy with flowers, candles and lovely workout gear everywhere.

All of us bloggers grabbed our resistance bands, the Pure Barre balls and a pair of dumbbells, and filed into the mirror-lined studio to get our butts kicked. We were joined by the owner and two trainers who helped us correct our form during the class.

Pure Barre

Before I tell you about my experience, I’ll share their technique:

“Pure Barre is a total body workout that lifts your seat, tones your thighs and burns fat in record-breaking time. Utilizing the ballet barre to perform small isometric movements set to fantastic music, Pure Barre is the fastest, most effective, yet safest way to change your body.”

I started out each exercise thinking “oh, I got this one!” Then, a few seconds later, I was sweating, shaking and swearing (hopefully under my breath). While we didn’t do any cardio, I was panting by the end of the class … and really darn tired. They weren’t kidding when they said the exercise would burn, it felt like my muscles were on fire. I woke up the next day sore but not unable to move. While I can’t speak to the long-term effects of regular Pure Barre sessions, I know I felt longer and leaner after just one class.

Have you taken a Pure Barre class before? I’d love to hear about your experience.

Marshall's #FabFoundTour

Marshalls #FabFoundTour Boston

Last night, I made a pit stop at the Marshalls #FabFoundTour on my way home from work. The tour bus is currently gracing a bunch of cities across the country from New York to Dallas  and Chicago to Miami. Last night – Boston.

At the bus, I was able to window shop (bus shop?) for fabulous designer deals, watch a runway show with eight looks styled from Marshalls finds and play dress-up in the virtual closet. The best part (aside from looking at all the lovely frocks, of course)? I got a $5 Marshalls gift card for tweeting my virtual closet look. Totally worth the fun time investment, if you ask me!

My virtual outfit. Black, blue and a pop of red.

I’m a huge advocate of Marshalls and it’s brother/sister store – TJMaxx. I’m constantly scouring the racks to see what new items arrived each week. I think it’s safe to say that at least 50% of my closet was purchased at one of the two stores. In fact, I just scored my all-time favorite fab find from Marshalls this past weekend. More on that in an upcoming post. For now, I’ll leave you with some more snaps from the event.

I had a great time at the Boston event, and I’m sure the other stops were/will be just as much fun. Did you make a visit to the tour in any of the cities? I’m dying to hear what you thought if you did!
