4 Beauty Products Perfect for a Holiday Road Trip

For many of us, the holidays mean spending valuable time with loved ones. For me, it also means taking a six and a half hour road trip from Virginia to Western NY so my husband, daughter and I can visit our families.

While road trips are a ton of fun (perfect excuse to update the iPod!), sometimes it’s hard to choose what beauty products to take and which to leave behind to conserve space.

Of course, if I had the extra trunk space that this 2013 Kia Sorento has, I could bring my entire wardrobe and all my beauty goodies with me!

07 model, 08 model, 09 model, 10 model, 11 model, 12 model, 13 model, 2007 model, 2008 model, 2009 model, 2010 model, 2011 model, 2012 model, 2013, model, appraisal, appraisement, asking price, auto, automobile, build, buy kia, car dealer, dealership, design, drive, estimate, forte, forte koup,, fuel efficiency, fuel efficient, gas mileage, hybrid model, kia, kia auto, kia automobile, kia dealership, kia forte, kia forte koup, kia hybrid, kia koup, kia optima, kia optima hybrid, kia optima turbo, kia sales, kia sorento, kia soul, kia website, kia.com, koup, lease, list price, make, miles per gallon, mpg, optima, optima hybrid, optima turbo, price quote, price estimate, rebate, sorento, soul, test drive, vehicle, warranty , forte koup, k

Check out all that room!  Alas, my own smaller car looks more like an overstuffed clown car when I’m through packing, so I’m stuck figuring out how to downsize as much as possible.

If you’re looking to pack light for your own holiday road trip, I recommend these four beauty essentials to keep you covered.

1.  Foundation & Concealer in One — Cover FX Total Cover Cream Foundation

I’ve always loved Cover FX, but now I love their Total Cover Cream Foundation even more!  It was recently reformulated, and it glides on your skin very easily. The new formula also seems to work better when it comes to sitting on top of small lines and wrinkles rather than creasing and settling in.  It’s creamier and velvety smooth!

This foundation saves you space when traveling, since the product is very build-able too, so it does double duty as a concealer for trouble spots.

Cover FX Cream Foundation does double duty as a concealer when you build it up.

The compact itself comes with space for a sponge applicator built right in, so you don’t need to worry about packing extra brushes or applicator sponges.

A hidden compartment houses the sponge applicator.

And did I mention the foundation also serves as an SPF 30?  You can’t get much more out of one handy product!!

2.  Lipstick that Stays Put — Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick

If you’re looking for a quick way to make a statement, nothing is hotter right now than a good matte lipstick. Of course, red is always a good option for the holidays, but a softer rose color also does the trick if you would rather tone it down a bit. I’m absolutely in love with Hourglass Opaque Rouge Liquid Lipstick, which was just launched this past fall.

The velvety matte lipsticks from Hourglass

First, this is a lipstick, even though you apply it like a gloss from a sponge applicator. Trust me — there is nothing glossy about it! Second, this Does. Not. Budge. I’m not kidding. I’m talking about a perfect pout that lasts through drinking, eating, kissing…almost anything.

I’ve never encountered any lipstick like this, even though there are many that claim to be long-lasting. The most surprising part is that it doesn’t dry your lips out either. It’s simply like you have another layer to your lips. The tube it comes in is about half the size of your typical gloss tube, and it’s flat, so you can easily store it in your wristlet or purse.

3.  An All-in-One Eye Shadow Palette — Chanel Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow

I’ve always been a big believer that you can accomplish pretty much any eye makeup look with just four eye shadows. And nobody does it better than Chanel when it comes to piecing together a gorgeous palette. Recently, I purchased the brand’s Les 4 Ombres Quadra Eye Shadow in its newest collection, Variation.

It’s not cheap (retails for $58), but I can get so many looks from just these four colors — everything from a lighter “day” look to a deep smokey purple “night” look.

And because the shadows are so versatile, I even use the small pointed sponge applicator that comes with the quad to “line” my eyes with the plum hue.

4.  A Quick Way to Cleanse — AVEENO® Ultra-Calming Makeup Removing Wipes

I’m lazy. Yup — I said it. When it comes to taking off my makeup at night, it’s hit or miss depending on how tired I am. Bad beauty blogger, I know!! That said, my whole makeup removal world was turned upside down in a good way when AVEENO launched its new Ultra-Calming Makeup Removing Wipes earlier this year.

I’m on my fourth packet of these babies.

They are so convenient! I just leave them by my bed, pull out a wipe, and take off my makeup in no time at all. These even work on getting my waterproof mascara off, so they’re the real deal, and they leave your face feeling smooth and hydrated too.

No makeup left on my face — wiped out!

The best part is that they are so easy to take with you on your travels, and you can even keep a pack in your purse if you wanted to.

What are your go-to beauty products to take on a holiday road trip?

Save Face, Support Skin Cancer Research With Cover FX

If you’ve ever over-imbibed in the summer sun, Cover FX wants to help you save face — both with its tinted moisturizer and brightening primer, and with a donation to fund skin cancer research.

And we at BX need to save face ourselves. I have to admit that while in recent years, I’ve been practicing safe sun, that hasn’t always been the case. But when you consider the statistics about sun protection, I have no idea why it took me so long. So, it’s time to absolve myself from my skin care sins.

To spread the word about the causes of skin cancer, through the remainder of June, Cover FX will make donations to The Skin Cancer Foundation in United States. You can contribute to the cause in three simple ways:

While many companies require a purchase to make a donation, I like that Cover FX lets you show your support with a simple click of the mouse. And if you want to make a larger donation by buying an amazing tinted moisturizer or primer — even better. Trust me — you can’t go wrong with these multi-tasking products that do their intended jobs AND protect you against the sun with built-in SPF.

I recently tested  SkinTint FX ($42) for the first time thanks to our friends at Cover FX, and I have to say it’s a summer must-have.

This tinted moisturizer and skin treatment is the perfect sheer solution to when you want a hint of color but don’t want to wear full foundation. It’s great applied alone or with spot-treating concealer over your “trouble areas” (aka zits for me), and if you must wear foundation, you can even put it on under that, since it feels just like a smooth cream. It’s also not heavy or thick on the moisturizing end, so you won’t feel like you just dipped your face in a tub of Crisco before venturing out into balmy temps.

So don’t delay (like I did in writing up this post — whoops!), and save face with Cover FX before June ends.

SkinTint FX and BritePrep FX ($45) are available in select Sephora stores, Sephora.com, Naimies, Dermstore.com, Skinstore.com and CoverFX.com.

In NYC or San Fran? Score a Free Tube of Conceal FX!

CFX_4x5-5_NMIt’s times like these that I wish I lived in New York City and am secretly jealous of Kristin, who will be moving there in May. Is it the hustle and bustle of day traders and magazine editors rushing to appointments? Is it the breathtaking views from the Empire State Building? Is it the delectable cuisine found on every block? Well, it’s yes to all of those things, but it’s also because Cover FX is going to give away one of my favorite concealers free to anyone who stops by the clock tower at Grand Central Station on March 24, between 4-6 p.m.

The brand makes it easy for you to score your own full size tube of Conceal FX ($25 retail value). Simply head for their “troops” dressed in camouflage, show them your battle wounds (under eye circles, brown patches and red spots) and they’ll arm you with your greatest defense. San Francisco beauties can also get in on the flash mob-style action at Union Square on March 29, from 4:30-6:30 p.m.

As for the rest of us, we can still check out Conceal FX, available in six shades, at Sephora and Sephora.com.  And be sure to sign up for the Cover FX “Inner Circle” to get great coupons on a variety of products along with news and helpful application tips.

mint glaze fx leaves cover

Give Lips the Cold (Sexy) Shoulder with Mint Glaze FX

MintGlazeFXThe only thing worse than enduring a nasty New England winter without any lip moisturizer is going through it with one that only does an okay job. Let’s face it –Vaseline might be effective, but it doesn’t really give off that I’m-so-sexy vibe. Lip gloss is luscious but doesn’t usually stand a chance against dry lips. So how do you get the best of both worlds? Why, with the MintGlaze FX that’s brought to you by Cover FX, of course.

Inside the sizable tube of this “fortifying lip treat-mint primer” lies 0.10 fluid ounces of peppermint heaven. The convenient wand applicator delivers a soothing, creamy gloss that actually tingles — and not in the allergic reaction way, either — to relieve cranky, cracked lips in need of a sexy pick-me-up. Plus, it’s got SPF 15!

I was surprised to find that the glaze left my lips neither waxy nor sticky. The tingling sensation suggested that it works a bit as a lip plumper, which would fulfill the product’s “volumizing” description, but its best asset is really in the lasting protective shine. You can use it as a primer under a lip stain, gloss or stick to quench thirsty puckers and make your color last longer, or go for a touched up natural look instead, and sport the clear glaze on its own. You can also dab some on before you head to bed and let the balm sink in while you sleep. Whichever way you choose to use it, this hydrating lip saint will be your new best friend.

Buy your own! It’s available online at Sephora for $22.

conceal fx concealer

Arm Yourself with New Conceal FX Concealer by Cover FX

conceal fx 1Cover FX has added the ultimate “concealed weapon” to its arsenal of foundations and cover up products — Conceal FX.  Now available at Sephora, Sephora.com and select Nordstrom stores in the U.S., Conceal FX offers the perfect opaque camouflage for disguising flaws ranging from everyday blemishes to vivid tattoos.

The concealer is made with rich colorants, light-diffusing mineral pigments and lightweight emollients, resulting in long-lasting coverage. According to Cover FX, potent ingredients such as Ceramides Plus, Comfort Complex, MultiPeptide Complex and Vitamins F.A.C.E. add treatment-like benefits, including wrinkle reduction, skin rejuvenation, skin firming and anti-oxidant protection.

When testing the product, Conceal FX glides on smoothly, while offering truly opaque coverage. Unlike a stick or other thicker-consistency concealers, Conceal FX feels light to the touch, and once on, it doesn’t dry out or feel heavy and cakey; it simply blends in with your foundation (we used it with Natural FX). The concealer is also water-resistant, so a little sweat won’t ruin your newly-flawless face.

A very small amount (about the size of a rice grain) will cover an area the size of a golf ball, so while the tube is small (15 ml/0.5 oz) and a bit pricey ($25), it should last a very long time.  Less is definitely more in this case; be sure to apply sparingly in areas with deeper creases (like crow’s feet), or else you may end up with “spider-webs” filled with the product.

The concealer comes in six shades, and you may want to err on choosing a color that’s a bit lighter than the name of your foundation if you use another brand.  If you’re a Cover FX junkie (like us), then this handy chart should help you find the perfect Conceal FX shade:

Whether the goal is to hide evidence of a late night out or a bit too much fun in the sun, with Conceal FX, the result is long-lasting coverage and a flawless-looking appearance.

Dietribe: Showing Signs of Stress

Stressful days = pizza dinners

Stressful days = pizza dinners for Anne

This week, I’ve been unbelievably stressed, and it’s written all over my face…literally.  In fact, when I booked a facial to unwind at Serenity in the City Salon and Spa in Medford, Mass., Kathleen, my fantastic esthetician, remarked that it looked like I had a rash on my face.  (A rash?  Is that what we’re calling zits these days?)  But after close inspection, I deducted that she was right — it was a full-on rash.

At first, we guessed it might be an allergy to something in my skin care routine, and she even suggested I stop testing products (but not to fear, my dear readers, as I will continue to put my face in the hands of potentially rash-inducing products, all in the name of beauty!).   But after a few days of staying extremely careful by using only products I’m used to, my skin is still the same.

Now, considering that I’ve been over-the-top stressed, I translated that into some really unhealthy habits.  I haven’t exactly been eating well or exercising much this week.   Or sleeping regularly, for that matter.  And while I could fudge the truth to you here, my face is telling the real story loud and clear.  (Of course, it is beautifully concealed under Natural FX and Conceal FX, both by Cover FX.)

So, there you go folks — living proof of the damaging effects of stress, a poor diet and lack of exercise.  This week, I need to bring everything back into balance, which I plan to do that during a much-needed vacation.  So I’ll be kicking anxiety and tension to the curb — hopefully, along with my rash.

Get Ready for Prime Time with BritePrep FX

What doesn't BritePrep FX do?

What doesn’t BritePrep FX do?

Cover FX, one of our favorite foundation makers (aptly coined “The Foundation Authority”), has done it again – this time with a foundation…for your foundation.  We’re talking about a primer, of course.  But the brand’s new BritePrep FX is more than just a primer for smooth foundation application – it’s also an instant and long-term skin brightener, a wrinkle disguiser, a multi-vitamin and a great sun protector.

Just call it the Swiss Army knife of primers.

President and Co-creator Lee Graff gives her take on the primer’s numerous benefits.  “Briteprep FX represents the next step forward in primer technology. Not only does foundation makeup wear better with Briteprep FX, but skin takes on a new radiance from ingredients that lighten uneven pigmentation, add luminosity and protect from the sun.”

How does a single primer product pack such a powerful punch?  Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • BritePrep FXSkin Brightener – Dermaveil-Brite technology, a blend of mineral silica microsponges and pearlized minerals, instantly enhances skin’s glow.  Arbutin Complex, a concentrate of BioActive BearBerry Extract and ODA White, offers long-term improvements in skin’s tone, texture and pigmentation.
  • Sun Protection – A powerful, water-resistant SPF 50 protects against UVA and UVB rays.  Teprenone protects against cell and DNA breakdown during UV exposure.
  • Multi-Vitamin – F.A.C.E multivitamins (F- Fatty Acid Omega 3 lipids; A- Anti-Age active; C- Clarifying and proCollagen; E- Emollient Anti-oxidant) help reduce fine lines and wrinkles, boost collagen production and protect with anti-oxidants
  • Wrinkle Disguiser – Dermaveil-Brite also serves as a breathable skin-smoothing veil that blurs the appearance of lines and pores for a flawless-appearing texture. Peptide Complex helps repair the visible signs of photo-aging and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

We used BritePrep FX underneath Natural FX and Mineral FX and witnessed the results first-hand.  Upon application, the power of Dermaveil-Brite was instantly evident.  Skin looked luminescent – but without appearing “shimmery” the way highlighting cosmetics can appear.  It was also clear how much easier it was to blend on both the water-based and mineral foundations after using the primer – and we thought the foundations applied smoothly and easily before!  The foundation just seemed to go farther – a little bit went a long way.  Best of all, it felt weightless throughout the day.

As for long-term brightening and wrinkle-reducing effect, only time will tell.  But we’re ecstatic with the initial results, so anything else is like adding an extra corkscrew or toothpick to this Swiss Army knife.

Experience it for yourself!  BritePrep FX ($45/30 ml.) is available at Sephora and other select retailers.

Travel Undercover with Mineral FX

Anne Houseman recounts her experience testing mineral foundation by Cover FX

mineral-fx-2When packing for my recent vacation to Belize, I was faced with a dilemma – forgo some makeup essentials so all of my 3-oz personal care products would fit in a miniscule plastic baggie, or risk losing my belongings by checking my bag for a three-leg flight (if you’ve ever been to the Belize City Municipal Gravel Landing Strip…er, Airport, you’ll understand my concern).

So while I pondered what to bring and what I could live without (hey – that old “desert-island” hypothetical is finally coming in handy!), I realized my answer was to go “undercover” and try out Cover FX‘s mineral foundation, Mineral FX.

If you know me, this was an adventure in and of itself (perhaps more daring than swimming with sharks).  When I find something I love, I stick with it – especially when it comes to foundation, which sets the whole “tone” of your look.  But, being in a different country and all, I figured I could risk looking awful to a bunch of strangers.

Before I go on, let me confess something – I’ve never tried mineral makeup.  Yes, I understand the gravity of this statement. (Takes deep breath.) Phew!  Now that’s off my chest, let’s continue.

natural-fxMineral FX had the perfect amount of coverage, hiding all but my most “serious” superficial flaws, which I covered with a dab of Natural FX water-based foundation.  I couldn’t believe how well Mineral FX blended and “melted” into my skin!  I’ve honestly never seen anything like it.

My face looked flawless – poreless.

kabuki-brushDespite my fear that Mineral FX would settle into my deepening skin canyons (a.k.a. wrinkles), it did the exact opposite, appearing to fill them in without creasing like a typical powder.  But what I have to say was the best part is that even when I was sweating like a stuck pig under the hot Belize sun, it never came off!  Not a drip, not a smear.  I even went swimming.  What’s more, the product boasts SPF 15, protecting my skin while hiding its flaws.

So, for all you ladies who’ve been thinking about trying mineral foundation (or jet-setting to a tropical island), I strongly recommend you give Mineral FX a try (available at www.sephora.com for $37).  It’s well worth the cost for the coverage.  It’s unbelizeable!*

*Anne Houseman is painfully aware of her corny sense of humor.  She hopes you enjoy it too, and if not, that you’ll pretend to.
