The Beach Meets Happy Hour

Elle Magazine, fabulous as always, shared 25 of their favorite essentials that you can take from the beach right to happy hour. As I’m still acclimating to the hot, humid temperatures of Boston (can you tell I’m missing Brasil’s winter season?), I’m seeing how important it is to be comfortable while you’re out enjoying food and a few drinks with friends.

While away, it was chilly enough to have to wear a sweater at night, but here, it’s still in the high 80’s with humidity at an all time high. So, if you’re planning on spending a day at the beach and then heading right into your evening plans, check out some of my favorite essential transition pieces.

I narrowed down Elle’s beach day collection to a few of my favorites.  Check them out below!

Get me to the beach … and a cocktail
  1. The Dress: A maxi is the perfect dress for a beach day turned night out.  It’s classy, fashionable, and totally comfortable.  A+ if you find one with an embellished collar like this beauty!
  2. The Shoe: Wedges are a lifesaver.  For real.  They’re comfortable and totally perfect for your beach to bar transition.
  3. The Bag: During the summer, the heat really makes me want to feel as free as possible.  I’m not sure if I explained that correctly, but essentially what I’m saying is I hate to have to carry a bag in summer.  So, I always go for a cute shoulder bag.  Plus, how can you resist this cobalt blue?
  4. The Accessory: If you are lucky enough to pick up an embellished maxi, go with a classic, simple piece of jewelry.  This delicate necklace from Shopbop is the perfect example.
  5. The Beauty Essential: Nars, by no surprise, has “The Multiple Stick,” which lets you highlight your sun glow on your cheeks, lips, collarbones, etc.  I haven’t tested this one out for myself just yet, but it sounds pretty perfect to me!

There you have it, one beautiful day to night look for the beach!

High Fashion, Low Maintenance: Summer Day-to-Night Fashions

Our style mantra: Fashion and beauty are for everyone, no matter how busy your schedule or how small your budget may be. We represent the fashionista who has places to go, people to see, or just likes to sleep in a few extra hours. There’s no reason to run to class in sweats and unblushed cheeks when glamour can be achieved with just a little extra effort. Check here as Chelsea unveils quick tricks and perfect products that can update your look in a hot second, without breaking your budget.

It always helps to have an outfit that can pull double duty, wearable both day and night. It can be quite easy to turn your summer day look into a night ensemble with just a few accessory switches.

Take one dress from the beach to the bar.

For an example of how to turn your look from day to night, I used this simple drawstring tank dress from American Apparel as the basis for both styles. Solid dresses are the easiest summer staple to transition with different accessories.

During the day, try a pair of flat, strappy sandals, like this pair by Lily Pulitzer. I love the little details in this pair, but you can find similar sandals for less almost everywhere this summer.

Take things up a notch at night with a pair of high-heeled wedges. This leather knotted pair from BCBG are adorable and very summer appropriate.

A large, hobo bag is your best friend on a busy day. You can only pull off straw accessories like this Gap bag in the summer, so rock it while you can.

At night you don’t need to carry much, so a clutch is easy and compact. Brown leather clutches, like this envelope clutch from Urban Outfitters, are a lighter, more summery version of the typical black.

Embrace summer with beach-y jewelry. You can’t quite wear a seashell around your neck come December, so wear simple accessories like this Tiffany’s inspired starfish necklace while it’s still warm.

Make a statement at night. Tiered necklaces, like this one from Lauren by Ralph Lauren, really stand out and easily dress up your look.

Practical and cute, a sun hat is sun protection and summer style all in one. This summer, the floppier the better, like this ribbon tied, terry cloth hat from Juicy Couture.

No need for a hat at night; instead pull your hair back and wear a pair of big, attention grabbing earrings. This pair from Kenneth Cole are gorgeous, but not gaudy.

Ask BX: How do I go from the office to a holiday party (without time to change)?

Dear BX,

I have several holiday parties coming up already, and I face the same problem every year.  How do I wear something that is fancy enough for a night-time soiree without looking entirely too overdressed at work?  I have quite a commute, so going home to change isn’t an option.  I just don’t want to look like a sparkly mess during the daytime. HELP!

-Amy Oxford

What a good question.

The easiest way to transition from the office to an evening holiday party is by wearing a relatively “plain” outfit and jazzing it up with bold accessories at night. And don’t worry, by “plain” we don’t mean boring. Instead, we mean staple wardrobe pieces, such as a little black dress or a nice trouser and classic top that can be a relatively blank canvas for any scenario.  All you need to do is carry a change of shoes and jewelry in your purse and voila, a few quick alterations, and you have transformed from the board room to the downtown lounge.

We’ve put together two example outfits below that would work perfectly for such a situation. So no need to fear dear Amy, you will be able to wow at work and the party without looking like a hot sparkly mess either.
