Things have been a bit crazy lately with all the travel for my “real” job, so May slipped through my fingers before I could find the time to write up a favorites post. And considering I’m about to depart on yet another trip (an actual vacation this time) for the next two trips, I won’t have time to do a June favorites before July rolls around. The solution here? A really late May favorites and an early June favorites all rolled in to one. Woop, woop!
Being on the go for the past few months has meant that my makeup routine has been trimmed down. I don’t feel the need to overload my carry-on with excess palettes or break the TSA 3-1-1 rule with multiple liquid foundations.
And when I have been home, I’ve been prepping for vacation with sunless tanner, bright polish and burn-free skin. And now that I’ve rambled for long enough, let’s get to the main event … my current beauty faves.
Since today is the last day of March (get the picture already, Mother Nature) I figured it would be a good time to pay homage to my month’s favorites. Aside from the brow wiz, these are all new goodies.
Hi there, beauties. March is here, which means a couple of things. For one, Spring is just a couple short weeks away. Second, it’s time for February favorites. Like last month, I don’t have a huge amount of favorites, but I’m going with a zen less-is-more approach to life lately. Ok, that’s a complete lie … I just got back from Sephora with more than I intended to purchase … but I have just been dabbling in a bit of this and a bit of that rather than obsessing over specific products. And with that, let’s gander my monthly favorites and check out the giveaway at the bottom of the post.
Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Dry Shampoo – This is not a new favorite. In fact, the first time that I wrote about this amazing product was August 2013. I use it more-or-less on a daily basis. On first-day, second-day and third-day hair. It adds volume and texture to my style in addition to having three other uses. And the fact that it’s only $6 at my local CVS is just the icing on the cake. Just assume that this dry shampoo is a monthly favorite moving forward unless I say otherwise.
L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Mascara – This is a new find rather than a recently re-discovered product. I had heard so many great things about this mascara online, but never got around to purchasing a tube of my own until last month. The first couple of tries were a huge flop and I thought that the hype was all smoke and mirrors. Then, as if by magic, the mascara did wonders for my lashes. They are lengthened, defined and almost look like falsies. Whenever I wear this, I get loads of compliments on my lashes, which is always the true test.
Lumene CC Cream– This isn’t a new product. Like the dry shampoo, I’m bringing it back from the back of my drawers. This Lumene CC cream makes my skin look naturally flawless and dewy. It’s the perfect everyday base for whatever look I am going after. I’m reaching the bottom of my bottle and it’s about time I replenish my stock.
Kate Spade New York ‘Gramercy Grand’ Bracelet Watch – This was a Christmas present from my parents. I had it on my personal Pinterest “wish list” board and they generously nabbed it for me. I squealed when I unwrapped it and put it on my wrist and I haven’t taken it off since. You will have seen it all of my fashion posts here, here and here.
This giveaway is now closed — Oh and another February favorite? Giving back to my readers! This month, I’m running a giveaway for a $50 Sephora gift card so you can treat yourself to some new goodies. Who knows, maybe they’ll be your March favorites. You can enter in the widget below. Good luck to all who enter!
If you’re like me, you love Valentine’s Day but your celebrations are pretty low key. My boyfriend and I never do anything too elaborate. He’ll send flowers to my office then we’ll eat dinner together at home. Fighting the crowds for a table at an over-priced restaurant just isn’t our cup of tea.
Low-key celebrations call for easy outfits and quick makeup routines. This year I’ll be visiting my grandparents in DC and going to afternoon tea for the day of love, so I’ll be opting for a 5-minute Valentine’s Day makeup routine. I filmed a quick tutorial on this look, which you can watch below or on our YouTube channel. I hope you enjoy!
January is a weird month, it’s the start of a New Year, which is exciting, but nothing really exciting happens during the 31 days. Retails stores are trying to sell all of their Winter items to get ready for Spring inventory, but shoppers really just want warmer weather. After a couple of holiday-filled months, January is relatively uneventful.
That general in-between feeling flowed over into my beauty stash as well. I was perfectly happy with all of the goodies I’ve been using, but I wasn’t overly obsessed with as many beauty products as before. Nothing was wrong with anything, but I only really flocked to a few products over and over.
Skin Authority Resurfacing Accelerator – I have a feeling this is going to be a skin care staple for life. It’s a gentle-yet-effective exfoliant, which is majorly needed during the cold, dry months. I use it nightly as soon as I get out of the shower and before I lather on the face lotion.
Chloé Eau de Parfum – This is an oldie for which I rediscovered my love this month. This is scent was actually one of the first presents my boyfriend got us when we started dating. He had been working in France for a few months and brought back the full-sized bottle for Christmas. This perfume is expensive, so rather than paying full price for a bottle that takes me forever to use, I picked up a rollerball last time when I was at Sephora. I’ve used it almost daily all month and I haven’t made much of a dent, so I have a feeling this small package will last me at least a few months. Plus, it’s easy to travel with, which is key for me with all the weddings and work events I travel to.
bareMinerals Touch Up To-Glow – I’ve been suuuuuuuuuper lazy this month, and foundation is just too much effort. This pressed powder has been the perfect easy solution for weekends when I just can’t even. One swipe across my face and my flaws mysteriously blur away and I look fresh-faced all day long. Sadly, this was part of their holiday collection, so I don’t think you can buy it anymore.
Rituals Hammam Hot Scrub – I’ve only had this for the past couple of weeks, but this is already a major favorite. The eucalyptus and ginger scent really wakens you up and the sea salt leaves your skin smooth and soft to the touch. I just noticed I’ve used almost half, so I’m trying to ration myself, but I have a feeling I’ll be buying a replacement real soon.
DermOrganic Leave-In Treatment – This stuff is made by gods. Just a drop or two and your hair is silky smooth and you’re waving hello to your most fabulous blowout ever. I’ve used it every day this month and I don’t think I’ve even used up a tenth of the bottle. I have a feeling DermOrganic and I are going to have a pretty long-term relationship.
Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner – This is another oldie that I rediscovered in January. I was feeling just a touch too lazy to bother with my regular stila liquid liner so I busted out my angled brush and this gel pot. I had forgotten just how much I love a good gel liner and how easy it is to apply in the morning when it’s pitch black and I’m wondering why I’m even awake.
SEPHORA+PANTONE UNIVERSE Facets of Marsala Multi-Finish Eye Palette – Sadly, this is another limited-edition product that seems to have sold out. I never would have imagined owning a palette like this because it has colors other than browns and nudes. THE HORROR. I see a green, blue and marsala shade. While this palette intimidated the hell out of me at first, I ended up loving it! I guess it pays to step out of your comfort zone.

I’ve been keeping something from you beauties for a while now, and I just couldn’t live with it anymore. Meet one of my main squeezes – the Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation. I’ve been using this foundation weekly, sometimes daily, for a few months now, and I just realized I was too busy applying it all the time to actually write up a review.
I’m typically not much of a foundation girl; I’m more of an alphabet cream kind of girl. BB Creams and CC Creams are my jam. But true to its name, the Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation offers airy coverage that can be built up to a heavy cover with a light feel. The foundation never cakes, flakes or leaves my skin ravaged at the end of the day.
And if I wasn’t convinced of my love already, I always get buttloads of compliments on my skin when I wear this, which is always the true test of a good foundation. Can others tell the difference (hopefully positive) in your skin?
And while we’re on the Charlotte Tilbury train, let’s quickly discuss their KISSING Lipstick. I have the shade Coachella Coral, and I haven’t made up my mind about it yet. I love the formulation and the wear the lipstick wears, but it’s a bit of an odd shade for Winter. I think the shade will grow on me as the weather warms, but I would buy another shade in a heartbeat.
So, moral of the story? I’m loving my Charlotte Tilbury products and I can’t wait to try out more. And while you’re at it, treat yo self and pick up some goodies for yourself.
Have you tried any Charlotte Tilbury products lately?
If there’s anything more exciting than makeup collections, it’s holiday makeup collections. The lovely packaging, the names and the seasonal hype add another layer (or three) of excitement on top of an already exciting product.
So imagine my excitement when I found all of the below fabulous items from the BareMinerals holiday collection. It took all of my restraint to photograph these goodies before playing with them. But somehow I managed, which means you get a sneak peek at the products.
When I think of a compact, images of pressed powder normally come to mind, not liquid foundation. So when I got the chance to test out the Pur Minerals Air Perfection Cushion Compact, I was too intrigued to say no. Plus, who doesn’t love to test out foundation?
I wasn’t sure what to expect from this foundation so I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it offered great coverage – not too heavy and not too light – that was lighter-than-air and long-lasting. The lightest shade, “light,” was slightly too dark for my current ghostly pale, but it would be perfect for my Summer “tan.”
As for application – I didn’t love the little puff that it came with, but I loved the airbrushed look I achieved when paired with my beauty blender. What doesn’t a beauty blender work with? That’s really a question for another post. And you ready for some more good news? You can snag the Pur Minerals Air Perfection Cushion Compact for $30 (regularly $38) at the moment, so get shopping!
What is your favorite lighter-than-air foundation?
I’ve always like the idea of false lashes, but have always hated the idea of the application. And the thought of peeling off lashes at the end of the night creeps me out. So when the lovely Kael reached out to me about testing out the Younique 3D Mascara, I saw the best of both worlds. The length and drama of falsies with the easy application of mascara.
Unlike most traditional mascaras, this Younique mascara involves two products (Transplanting Gel and Natural Fibers) and three steps. You first apply a coat of Transplanting Gel, followed by a coat of Natural Fibers and then top it off with another coat of Transplanting Gel. These two products combined add both length and volume to your lashes, giving you the appearance of falsies without the hassle.
While I loved the look of the product when applied, there was a bit of drop-off with the fibers after application. A few fibers landed on my cheek and were hard to brush off, but a bit of concealer and a fluffy brush helped to clean them up. In the photo below, I have Younique on my right lashes and my normal COVERGIRL mascara on my left lashes.
For $29, this is a bit pricier than most of my other mascaras, but I think it’s worth the price considering you get two products in the package and it adds so much extra drama to your look. Plus, this would be absolutely perfect for all of the upcoming holiday parties (read: photo ops).
I haven’t given all of these products a test run just yet, but I wanted to share my photos with you ASAP. I have worn a couple of the lip glosses and boy do they gloss. They have great color payoff and lasting power. I’ll update you with some makeup look and swatches in a bit. In the meantime …
And now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go play with some makeup!
