Outfit Options: New Year’s Eve

Can you believe we’re just a couple of short weeks to the end of 2014 and the start of 2015? You probably can assuming that you have either a physical or electronic calendar that you can consult. But that’s beside the point.

To ring in 2015 correctly and start the year on a good foot, you’ll need (obviously NEED and not want) to rock a New Year’s Eve outfit that’s as fabulous as you. And plus, if there is one night when no one can mock you (or remember) for wearing a romper, NYE is the night. To help you plan for the midnight countdown, I’ve pulled together three outfit options that could work for (almost) every party.

A New Look for New Year’s Eve

I am, without a doubt, a lady who enjoys sparkle, glitter, and the whole shebang for holidays like New Year’s Eve.  But, I’m thinking of trying something a little different this time around — something along the lines of a super classy and refined dress, while leaving the sparkle for the accessories.

In an ideal world, I would be wearing this on NYE:

This BHLDN Feria Dress ($220).  I just love the flattering silhouette, the soft hue, and neckline detail.  The Feria is a perfectly plain dress that will always be in fashion.

This BHLDN Projected Luminescence Sash ($180).  To me, it makes perfect sense to purchase a plain dress for NYE.  That way, you can dress it up, dress it down, and accessorize it for any other occasion!  Plus, how fantastic would this sash look with the Feria dress?

This adorable gold Kate Spade Clutch ($198).  Recent fashion shows that mixing metals is totally acceptable when accessorizing, so why not try mixing your dark silver and golds?  Be bold this NYE!

These golden Ava Glitter Pumps by J.Crew ($179).  Because, in my book, glittered shoes are always a welcome sight.

And finally, this Kate Spade bangle/watch ($250).  You have the glitter, you have the perfect pumps, now it’s time finish off the look with a few subtle polka dots.  This Make a Day of It Carousel Bangle by Kate Spade is definitely my number one choice this season.

What look are you going for this NYE?

Fab Finds: Sequins

New Year’s Eve is one holiday that I feel is appropriate to bring out the inner glitter in you. I’ve always been drawn to sequin details and sophisticated embellishments causing New Year’s Eve to be one of my favorite holidays to dress for.

Sequin items are the perfect way to express your excitement for the new year and join in on the shimmery festivities. The outfit you wear on New Year’s Eve is the first outfit you will be wearing in the new year, so it is important to start the new year off right! Entirely sequined dresses and dresses with just a touch of sequins will definitely be spotted this New Year’s Eve, as well as trendy sequin blazers and shorts. No matter what outfit you decide to wear, don’t leave out a little glitz.

Scope out some of my favorite sequin finds for this New Year’s Eve below and begin planning your outfit today!

Will you be rocking sequins this year when the ball drops in Times Square?

New Year, New Outfit

I’m not one to wear sequins, but for New Year’s Eve I think they’re the perfect fit. A sequin dress like this one from Zara is fun and flirty, perfect for a night like this. I especially like the v-back since it shows a little bit of skin in a different way. This gold sequin dressfrom ASOS is another great pick.

You'll upstage the ball drop in this dress

Cut outs in tops and dresses are another pick for New Year’s Eve because like the sequin v-back dress, they show some skin but not too much. This tunicfrom ASOS can be paired with skinny jeans, leggings, or tights.

You won't have trouble finding a midnight kiss in this cut-out dress

A pair of heels is a necessity for New Year’s Eve and this year, there are so many types to choose from. If you’re wearing sequins on top, try a bright colored solid pair like these from Steve Madden. If you’ve stayed away from the sequins, add some sparkle to your heels. Aldo’s Bouch Heels and Durling Heelshave just enough shine.

Not your average nude pumps

Will you be adding some sparkle to your New Year’s Eve outfit?

Fab Finds: New Year’s Eve Dresses

This New Year’s, spice it up a bit by sporting a frock that isn’t all black or covered in sequins. Crazy, I know. If you want to stand out this New Year’s Eve, you’re going to need to wear a bit of color and skip the shimmer (except your own natural glow, of course). Grab of these dresses and you’ll be dressed to impress.

Celebrity Hair Stylist David Babaii Gives Tips for Pretty Party Hair Styles

Stella McCartney Shop Celebrates Fashion Night Out

It’s time for the party of the decade — the last party of the decade, to be exact. As you head out to your New Year’s Eve celebrations — or any party, really — don’t let the racing tick tock of the clock get in the way of a gorgeous hair style. Even if you only have five minutes to spare, you can achieve a party-perfect look with just a few simple steps. According to one of the most sought-after celebrity hair stylists, David Babaii, the secret lies in keeping your locks looking “natural messy” instead of stiff and structured.

Babaii, who has styled the world’s top actresses including Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Uma Thurman, Jessica Alba and Sarah Jessica Parker, just to name a few, believes everyone can get a red-carpet-worthy mane by using the right styling products for their hair type. Recently, the 34-year-old hairstylist has teamed up with actress Kate Hudson to create a new collection of professional hair care products called David Babaii for Wildaid, where a portion of proceeds support reversing the devastation of the planet’s wildlife. Babaii suggests using the right combination of these products can help achieve the perfect “natural messy” party hair style.

david babaii for wildaid bohemian beach spray“If you hair is curly or wavy, my Bohemian Beach Spray will add just the right amount of texture and curl,” said Babaii. “For added lift and volume, Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier will do the trick on all types of hair. For straight hair, use Hair Polish to add that boost of shine that will allow the festive lights to bounce off your glistening hair.”

So how do you get a natural messy look with only a few minutes before your festivities? Babaii says it’s as simple as having half of your hair up and the rest down, or all of it in a messy pony tail with some small rhinestone pins added for a touch of glitz. For best results, Babaii says to prep your hair pre-party by wearing it in a messy ponytail created by twisting and twirling the hair, followed by a spritz of Bohemian Beach Spray.

“When you are ready to go out you have two style options,” said Babaii. “For the half up and down, undo the ponytail and gently finger comb the waves and spray some Volcanic Ash Root Lift for volume and lift. Pick up the sides and secure with decorative pins. For the up-do, simply loosen some strands from the ponytail and apply some Hair Polish to smooth them while twisting them in different shapes. Secure them with rhinestone pins.”

Have a closely-cropped mane? Babaii suggests adding a simple accessory like a headband or sparkly pin to dress up your ‘do. However, he cautions against adding too much bling to your body. “It is also important not to overdo [hair accessories] and compete with your jewelry. Less is best.”

Ask BX: What can I Wear on New Year’s Eve that I can Wear Again?

AskBX_LBDDear BX,

Every year I spend a fortune on a New Year’s Eve dress I only wear once. What kind of outfit can I do that’s still special for the holiday but also recyclable?

– Audrey K.

As if the pressure to do something fabulous on New Year’s Eve isn’t enough! Finding the ultimate New Year’s ensemble is never easy, but it’s heavenly when you snag it. Nonetheless, there’s no reason why the perfect one can’t be perfect for something else, too.

One option is to invest in a LBD, or little black dress, if you haven’t already. Super sexy and totally versatile, the LBD is a serious must have piece. When shopping, make sure you pick a dress that’s adaptable year round so you get the most out of it. For example, a long sleeved or velvet dress is something you could never get away with in the summer months, though a strapless or halter style works anytime of the year. For New Year’s, glam up your LBD with gigantic earrings and bangles or a “speaks for itself” statement necklace. For shoes, black pumps or boots will do the trick, but don’t be afraid to break out a vibrant stiletto for an extra jolt.

AskBX_2pYour other outfit option to ring in the new year is to go two-piece. A sexy tank or flowy silk blouse and mini can be mixed and matched time and time again. On top, pick something that can be tucked into a high-waisted skirt and can also be worn with jeans and boots for a chic daytime look. On bottom, stick to the same guidelines for finding a versatile LBD and try not to pick something seasonal if you know you’ll want to rock it all year round.

Have a fabulous and fashionable New Year!
