January Favorites

January Favorites 2015

January is a weird month, it’s the start of a New Year, which is exciting, but nothing really exciting happens during the 31 days. Retails stores are trying to sell all of their Winter items to get ready for Spring inventory, but shoppers really just want warmer weather. After a couple of holiday-filled months, January is relatively uneventful.

That general in-between feeling flowed over into my beauty stash as well. I was perfectly happy with all of the goodies I’ve been using, but I wasn’t overly obsessed with as many beauty products as before. Nothing was wrong with anything, but I only really flocked to a few products over and over.

January Favorites

Skin Authority Resurfacing Accelerator – I have a feeling this is going to be a skin care staple for life. It’s a gentle-yet-effective exfoliant, which is majorly needed during the cold, dry months. I use it nightly as soon as I get out of the shower and before I lather on the face lotion.

Chloé Eau de Parfum – This is an oldie for which I rediscovered my love this month. This is scent was actually one of the first presents my boyfriend got us when we started dating. He had been working in France for a few months and brought back the full-sized bottle for Christmas. This perfume is expensive, so rather than paying full price for a bottle that takes me forever to use, I picked up a rollerball last time when I was at Sephora. I’ve used it almost daily all month and I haven’t made much of a dent, so I have a feeling this small package will last me at least a few months. Plus, it’s easy to travel with, which is key for me with all the weddings and work events I travel to.

bareMinerals Touch Up To-Glow – I’ve been suuuuuuuuuper lazy this month, and foundation is just too much effort. This pressed powder has been the perfect easy solution for weekends when I just can’t even. One swipe across my face and my flaws mysteriously blur away and I look fresh-faced all day long. Sadly, this was part of their holiday collection, so I don’t think you can buy it anymore.

Rituals Hammam Hot Scrub – I’ve only had this for the past couple of weeks, but this is already a major favorite. The eucalyptus and ginger scent really wakens you up and the sea salt leaves your skin smooth and soft to the touch. I just noticed I’ve used almost half, so I’m trying to ration myself, but I have a feeling I’ll be buying a replacement real soon.

DermOrganic Leave-In Treatment – This stuff is made by gods. Just a drop or two and your hair is silky smooth and you’re waving hello to your most fabulous blowout ever. I’ve used it every day this month and I don’t think I’ve even used up a tenth of the bottle. I have a feeling DermOrganic and I are going to have a pretty long-term relationship.

Smashbox Jet Set Waterproof Eye Liner – This is another oldie that I rediscovered in January. I was feeling just a touch too lazy to bother with my regular stila liquid liner so I busted out my angled brush and this gel pot. I had forgotten just how much I love a good gel liner and how easy it is to apply in the morning when it’s pitch black and I’m wondering why I’m even awake.

SEPHORA+PANTONE UNIVERSE Facets of Marsala Multi-Finish Eye Palette – Sadly, this is another limited-edition product that seems to have sold out. I never would have imagined owning a palette like this because it has colors other than browns and nudes. THE HORROR. I see a green, blue and marsala shade. While this palette intimidated the hell out of me at first, I ended up loving it! I guess it pays to step out of your comfort zone.

Holiday Gift Guide for Her: Perfume

Fragrance is such a personal choice. After all, scent is the strongest sense tied to memory. And if someone is going to remember you, you want them to remember that you smelled lovely and not like old gym clothes. So this holiday season, check out my perfume gift guide if you’re shopping for a fragrance lover … or yourself.

elizabeth and james

Fragrance Scentral: Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black

On on my recent Sephora binges, I scooped up a perfume I’ve been eyeing for a month or so now – Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black.

Who wouldn’t want to be them?!

I wanted to be Mary Kate and Ashley growing up, so naturally I couldn’t resist a spritz of both perfumes in the Nirvana collection – Black and White. According to Sephora, the two fragrances to represent the duality of their partnership. I’m not entirely sure what that means, but I’m entirely sure I fell in love with the Black side of their partnership. It’s a spicy yet floral scent that’s masculine with just a drop of feminine. Since I suck at describing fragrances and I’m sure that description was no help to you at all, I’ll let Sephora do some talking:

Elizabeth and James Nirvana Black is an addictive blend of alluring violet, sensual sandalwood, and rich vanilla that strike the perfect balance between masculine and feminine.

The packaging matches the scent

My only real complaint is that the scent doesn’t last on me all day long. I did purchase the rollerball rather than the standard spray bottle, so maybe that has something to do with it? Either way, I don’t regret my purchase and would recommend it to you you ladies who love a musky, masculine perfume. If this doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, check out my other favorite scents.

Have you given either of the Elizabeth and James scents a try?

tory burch

Fragrance Scentral: Tory Burch

Affiliate links are used in this post.

This past Saturday I mysteriously found myself at Sephora. I have no idea how I got there … it’s a huge mystery. I swear! I blame it all on Gouldylox and her post about YSL’s Glossy Stain. She sold me on the product’s awesomeness, so I went to pick up my own. See the evidence below:

YSL Glossy Stain
Snatched it up in Rouge Gouache

While checking out, my fabulous cashier (her name is Diamond, what’s more fab than that?) offered me a Tory Burch fragrance sample. Of course I said yes, who do you think I am? I never got on the Tory Burch bandwagon, so I wasn’t expecting much out of the fragrance. I assumed I would be whelmed by it. Not overwhelmed and not underwhelmed, just whelmed.

Tory Burch Fragrance

I was wrong, as I often am but never admit. I was pleasantly surprised by the fragrance. It’s sophisticated without being overly feminine or overbearing. And, I’ve decided it reminds me of a slightly more subtle version of Chloé Eau de Parfum. Since that is a crap description of what it actually smells like, I’ll let Sephora take it from here:

The first fragrance from Tory Burch captures classic elements in unexpected ways: feminine and tomboy, easy and polished. Floral peony and tuberose blend with crisp citrus notes of grapefruit and neroli anchored by earthy vetiver—a bright and complex mix. The fragrance comes in a super-chic glass bottle with a signature fretwork top. Notes: Neroli, Grapefruit, Cassis, Bergamot, Peony, Tuberose, Jasmine Sambac, Vetiver, Sandalwood.

If you’re interested in snatching up a bottle of your own, you can ask for a sample next time you go to Sephora or purchase a bottle all of your own.

Have you tried this fragrance yet?

Must-Have Fragrances

I admit it, I have a fragrance addiction.  I can barely walk into a Sephora without smelling about 10 perfume bottles.  Really, it’s a problem.  At the moment, I have quite the interesting collection – L’Occitane, Burberry, Aerie, Versace, and more.  But, I have been good enough to narrow down my favorites this year to just four.

I’m really into sweet, airy, and flowery fragrances.  I’m known to wear lighter scents – musky just doesn’t appeal to me at all.  If you have a similar taste in perfumes, these four are going to be right up your alley.

Why pick one when you can pick four?

Check out my favorite four fragrances below:

  1. Marc Jacobs: This Marc Jacobs scent has me totally in love.  This Daisy Eau So Fresh is fruity, playful, and light enough to wear everyday.
  2. Versace: Versace’s Bright Crystal will always be one of my favorites.  This scent is refreshing and sweet, and a perfect mix of pomegranate and peonies.
  3. CLEAN: A few years back I met a woman at work who was wearing the most amazing perfume.  I couldn’t help but ask her what she had on – it was CLEAN!  After a few moments of confusion about the name, I pulled out some receipt paper and promptly wrote it down.  And honestly, it really does just smell so….fresh and clean.
  4. I had heard so much about the Flowerbomb craze, but I somehow managed to not actually wear it until earlier this month.  I was immediately obsessed.  The mix of Jasmine, rose, freesia (to name a few) is to die for.

Currently Loving: July 2013 Perfume Favorites

Fragrance is a very personal experience, and certain smells can trigger very powerful memories. A perfume can say a lot about the person wearing it, which makes purchasing a new scent a very momentous occasion. I’ve rounded up the six perfumes I am currently sporting (not all at the same time, of course!) in hopes of helping you find your new scent. Disclaimer: I’m horrible at describing scents, so be warned.

Love these fragrances!

1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6

Kenzo Amour is a sentimental fragrance for me, as it is the first “adult” perfume I bought for myself my freshman year of college. I remember feeling so sophisticated walking myself to the Sephora in the Prudential Center and purchasing this all by myself. If that doesn’t scream maturity, I don’t know what does. It’s the only fragrance I wore for at least 2-3 years, and my dorm neighbor even told me that Kenzo Amour reminds her solely of me. I think they should rename it “Eau de Kristin;” it’s really a classy name. Notes: Rice Steam, Vanilla, Tanakha Wood, Musk, Cherry Blossom, Frangipani Blossom.

Chloe Eau de Parfum is another sentimental fragrance; it’s one of the presents my BF gave me on our first Christmas together. Not only that, but he bought it for me while in France for work, so it makes it naturally more classy. So much better than the bottles purchased here in the U.S., obviously.  This is my go-to “sophisticated” perfume that I spritz whenever I have an exceptionally nice event to attend. Notes: Pink Peony, Freesia, Lychee, Magnolia Flower, Lily of the Valley, Rose, Cedarwood, Amber, Honey.

L’Occitane Eau Ravissante was gifted to me by the lovely folks at L’Occitane. I love their skincare products, but I must admit that I had NO idea they carried fragrance as well until a couple of months ago. Bad beauty blogger, bad. I am loving this fragrance for the Summer since it is light, citrusy and just a touch floral-y (totally a word, right?). For a full review of this scent, check out Gabi’s post from about a month ago. Notes: Mediterranean bergamot and Damascena rose.

Marc Jacobs Lola was an impulse buy during a total TJX-owned company shopping spree/blackout. There was the one day where my friend and I went to 7 different TJX-owned stores in 7 different towns … don’t even ask. It was glorious! Anywho, Lola made it into the cart with more or less everything in sight. While I ended up returning a lot of my purchases during a serious bout of buyer’s remorse, I just couldn’t part with Lola. Notes: pink peppercorn, pear, ruby red grapefruit, rose, fuschia peony, geranium, vanilla, warm tonka bean and creamy musk.

Kate Spade Twirl came into my life during a perfume-sprtizing frenzy in my friend’s bedroom. She was getting ready in the bathroom, so I just helped myself to all of her perfumes. I mean, why not? The other perfumes were just whatever, but I was smitten with Twirl right away. And when I spotted it on sale at TJMaxx later that week … must have been fate! Notes: mandarin, pink pepper, blackberries, white peach , red currant berries, watermelon, jasmine, magnolia, orange blossom, tiaré flower, amber, musk, skin accord, macaron.

Philosophy Eternal Grace was a birthday gift from my BF’s mother. While I love smelling all the scrumptious Philosphy scents at Sephora, I’ve never actually made a purchase. Eternal Grace is crisp, clean and perfect for the Summer or an event when you need a universal perfume. I couldn’t find the “notes” for this fragrance, but I did find this: Eternal Grace spray fragrance is a contemporary blend of Philosophy’s classic clean, crisp notes, along with delicate floral and bright citrus that leaves a timeless impression. It’s a bummer though, I think that this fragrance has been discontinued. Scoop it up while you still can!

Beauty for Less: Lavanila Fragrance

Kenzie shares her thoughts on Lavanila fragrances. Products were provided for review, but opinions are all Kenzie’s own.

When I was younger, I used to pile on the sweet smelling fragrances that resembled the scent of sugary candy more than it did real fruit. I covered my body head to toe in body mist, thinking it made me smell terrific. However, as I have gotten older and my tastes have matured, I’ve learned that less is more when it comes to perfume and I tend to opt for more subtle fragrances.

While I like to switch up my perfume from day to day, many of my perfumes resemble the pure, sweet smell of vanilla. One of my tried and true favorites is Lavanila Pure Vanilla, and recently I am loving Lavanila Vanilla Blackberry as well!

All Lavanilla products are 100% Healthy products, which the brand claims include only the highest quality natural and organic ingredients and are completely free of commonly used harsh chemicals.

Best of all, Lavanila makes packing for summer a cinch with The Healthy Roller-Ball Fragrance. This portable package is the perfect size for your summer beach bag or clutch.

With so many amazing products and delicious scents, it will be difficult to pick just one!

What scent are you going to try?

Fragrance Scentral: FLIRT! Kittenesque Spray

I’m just going to address the elephant in the room up front … the name of this perfume is a little chintzy. Ok, now that we’ve gone over that, let’s move on.

Cute packaging

While I do like FLIRT! Kittenesque Spray, I would say it’s a bit of a younger scent. In my opinion, it seems a bit more appropriate for someone in the mid-20s or younger, mainly because of the vanilla scents. However, that’s only my humble opinion, so please take it with a grain of salt, as fragrance is such a personal experience. It’s also important to note that the scent only lasts a few hours (yet this will most likely vary from person to person), so you would need to reapply throughout the day.

FLIRT! Kittenesque Spray

As I said, I do like FLIRT! Kittenesque Spray becaude it’s young, fun and dare I say it? Flirty. You all know I’m awful at describing scents, so I’ll let the Kohl’s website do the talking.

Flirt with your wild side wearing this playful blend of fruity and vanilla scents. This perfume offers scents of orange blossom, raspberry and creamy vanilla.

FLIRT! Kittenesque Spray is sold exclusively at Kohl’s and retails for $39.50 per 1.7fl oz bottle.

Product Review: Travalo Excel

Every morning before getting ready for work, I end my routine by spritzing myself with the current perfume I’m using three times—once on my neck, my wrists, and my hair (I learned a trick that the scent lasts longer when you let the scent float onto your hair).  However, by about 1 pm, if I’m lucky, the fragrance of my beloved perfume has completely vanished.

I’ve always contemplated ways to prevent this from happening. Bringing the entire bottle around is certainly not an option and buying a smaller version or roller ball can become expensive quickly. That’s why when I learned of the Travalo, I could have not been more intrigued to try it out!

So many color choices!

Travalo is a miniature bottle that allows you to tote around your favorite perfume with you at all times. The bottle has an easy and creative way of transferring the perfume from your regular bottle to the Travalo in just seconds! Travalo is even approved for your carry-on luggage, a time when I usually find myself having to part with my favorite perfumes for a trip.

I was nicely sent a sample of the latest version called the Travalo Excel, which holds 5 ml of fragrance, or approximately 50- 65 sprays. I tried transferring my current Marc Jacobs Daisy perfume to the bottle and was thrilled to succeed instantly in just a few steps.

Prepare the perfume of your choice and remove the cap.
Gently pull the nozzle off the top of the perfume bottle and place to the side.
Line the bottom of the Travalo up with the top of the perfume bottle. Pump the Travolo up and down several times (you will see the perfume level rise from the window on the side).

Ta-da! Your perfume is ready for travel.

I already love this product and appreciate its practicality immensely. The Travalo Excel is retailed at $19.99 and can be purchased at http://us.travalo.com/ .

Bon voyage with your Travalo!

All I want for Christmas is … to smell like my boyfriend

Man, I feel like a ... man?

Maybe I’m a bit whacko (or definitely I am), but I prefer the smell of man over feminine perfumes that boast rose and other frilly floral scents. Musky, woodsy scents make me feel powerful … and maybe I just like to pretend my boyfriend is with me all the time.

Naturally, I jumped at the opportunity to sample actress Kate Walsh’s perfume Boyfriend. Now, I’m not a pro at describing fragrances in the least, so I’m going to make use of the very eloquent description on Sephora:

This fragrance evokes memories of that time after he has left for the day when she gently awakes in a bed that’s still warmly redolent of “boyfriend.”

An alluring balance of vanilla, jasmine blossoms, and an accord of amber is set against the sensual scents of a man, including a light musk and a shimmer of fresh woods. Boyfriend. Wear him.

This scent is the right mix of musk, woody, vanilla and amber. It is reminiscent of a sexy cologne, while still feminine enough to not make you smell like you’re doing a walk of shame 24/7.

If you want a large dose of Boyfriend, you can purchase the Boyfriend Kit (with perfume, votive candles and so much more) for $95 at Sephora. Or, you could start with a smaller Boyfriend in the form of perfume, body creme or body oil spray, ranging from $20-$65.
