Budget Beauty at the Oscars: Idina Menzel

It’s well known that the stars and their teams of stylists go all out for the Oscars, so I’m always in awe when I find out that a celebrity’s look was created from budget beauty products.

And the big winner in the budget beauty category from the 86th Academy Awards was Idina Menzel, who stunned fans with a glamorous makeup look created by products all found at Target for less than $25 each. Yes, you read that correctly!

Idina's entire makeup look was created by items costing less than $25 each!

Thanksgiving Traditions – #MyKindOfHoliday with Target

The most wonderful time of the year is upon us … holiday season! While Christmas is the icing on my holiday cake, Thanksgiving is pretty sweet too. Now I’m going to tell you a secret that might shock some people … I haven’t been home for Thanksgiving in about 5+ years. What the what?! I know, I know, what a terrible daughter/sister. Seeing that my family lives in Michigan and I live in Boston, visiting for a long weekend just isn’t the most practical. But then, holidays aren’t really practical, are they?

Well it’s a new year, and that means it’s time for a new plan. Drum roll, please …. I’ll be visiting my family in Michigan for Thanksgiving. While their town isn’t the most exciting, I am excited to see everyone and to celebrate my sister’s 16th birthday with her. It will be great because I can drink all the wine I want and she can drive me around to all of the places I want. Muahahaha.

I actually don’t think we’ll have time to make a turkey this year because of some early-morning obligations, I am dead-set on having the sides I grew up with. I can’t imagine Thanksgiving without green bean casserole, “orange blossoms,” mashed potatoes and “derby pie.” The quotation marks denote fancy-pants Bassett recipes, which I can’t share because they wouldn’t be secret. And because I actually don’t know them by heart/I don’t have the recipes on me.

These are orange blossoms

I’m also excited to pick my Secret Santa-ee in person this year. Since I’m one of 7 children, we do Secret Santa so that the kids (especially the younger ones) aren’t burdened with having to buy presents for everyone. Only my parents have to do that … it’s what they get for having 7 kids! The last five years, my dad has picked my Secret Santa-ee for me, which is not very exciting.

Plus, since I’ve been attending Thanksgiving at my boyfriend’s family and my extended family’s houses these past 5 years, I haven’t felt at liberty to go to town with the table setting. I once got grounded for sassing my dad about him wanting to use plastic cups for Thanksgiving dinner. What kind of low-class joint is this, really?! I think I’ll take the liberty of pulling out the nice plates and glasses, and who knows, maybe I’ll even dig up some seasonal center pieces. If I can’t find any at my parents, I can scoot over to Target, which is conveniently 5 minutes down the road. Who knows what I’ll find – a festive ceramic turkey or some cute new place settings.

Fash For Less: J.Crew vs Target

If you’ve been following this column or reading my blog, you know that I am a huge fan of J.Crew. Whether it is their stylish clothes, inspired baubles or fashion forward footwear, J. Crew’s designs are fresh and fun. And when they recently launched their spring line, I wanted every piece in the store.

In fact, it looks like I’m not the only one coveting J.Crew’s spring designs, Target has recently released a number of pieces that mimic the look and feel of the J.Crew spring line. The only difference is the price. The target look-a-likes on average cost at least half of their J.Crew counterpart’s price tag.

Below I have assembled a few of my favorite J. Crew shoes and their Target look-a-likes. Can you tell the difference?

J.Crew vs. Target

J. Crew Seville Wedge Espadrilles I Merona® Marguerite Wedge Espadrille

J. Crew Crushed Glitter Sandals I Xhilaration® Lavada Slide Sandal

J. Crew Quorra Ballet Flats I Mossimo Supply Co. Latia Flat

Would you splurge on the J.Crew style or save with the Target alternative?

Prabal Gurung

Prabal Gurung for Target

Just like there was The Webster for Target and Jason Wu for Target, fashion designer Prabal Gurung is coming to Target next month. I cannot wait for his line to appear in Target stores on February 10 and I can assure you that I’ll be there snagging as many pieces of his as I can.

One of the reasons I am a loyal Target shopper is because of these limited designer collections. I love that they allow normal people to buy a famous designer’s pieces at a fraction of the usual price. With clothing and accessories between $13 and $200, there’s a wide range of items in this collection to buy.

This dress is the perfect mix of cool and casual

Gurung’s collection for Target is full of bright colors and feminine prints making it the ultimate wardrobe for spring. From flirty dresses to bright patterns, I love everything that I have seen so far. His incorporation of color makes simple dresses youthful and fun. There are so many that I already have my eye on that I’m looking forward to seeing in the store.

I think a way to describe this collection is “fun adult.” With classically structured dresses and peplum tops, this collection has a lot of very clean lines that are seen all of the time in the office, but Gurung modifies the stuffy office look with color. He literally takes drab to fab and I think wearing some of his pieces in the office will literally and figuratively brighten anyone’s day.

Will you be counting the days to this collection?

The Webster for Target

The Websteris a luxury multi-brand boutique located in Miami Beach, but now it’s available at your local target for much less.  Target’s known for bringing big names to the store for cheaper prices and this new addition is one of my favorites so far. The Webster for Target takes classic styles and mixes them with fun prints. Check out some of my favorites.

I'm loving this dress!

This sheath dress is the best purchase I have made in a long time. It’s classy, but the print keeps it from being too stuffy. I think this dress is so versatile and I already plan on wearing it for several occasions. From work to dinner, this dress is a perfect fit. Plus, it was only $39.99.

Fine Gauge Pink Cardigan $32.99

For when you need something to cover up, The Webster for Target has adorable cardigans. I love how the fine gauge pink cardigan is mixed with navy and accented by the gold buttons. There’s no doubt that this cardigan is super preppy and super cute. Not loving the pink? Don’t worry. This cardigan comes in cream as well.

Pink Cap Toe Wedge Pump $39.99
Beads & Castings Long Necklace $24.99

This line doesn’t just stop at clothing. From shoes to scarves to earrings, The Webster for Target has everything you need. These wedges are casual enough for the daytime, but can be worn for a dressier look at night. Pair them with a Webster dress and this necklace and you’ll be good to go.

Will you be heading to Target soon to check out the Webster line?

What’s In Your Beach Bag?

It’s that time of year. Memorial Day officially kicks off beach season, which means it’s time for bathing suits. If, like me, you’re not ready to begin searching for swimsuits just yet, focus on all of the accessories you can bring to beach and worry about the dreaded bathing suit shopping in a few weeks.

If you don’t mind walking around the beach in just your bathing suit for the entire day, then you can skip this paragraph and I envy you. Personally, I prefer to bring a cover up for those times when I’m not swimming or tanning and I’m just hanging out. H&M has a lot of great lightweight dresses and tunics that can double as a cover up. I love this blue cotton tunic for the beach because it’s made out of cotton, so it’s breathable. Plus, it’s super cute.

H&M Tunic $24.95

I always try and pack light when I go to the beach, but it’s hard to when I’m packing books, sun block and everything else I think I need for the day. Get a larger sized beach tote, but make sure it’s inexpensive. You don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on a gorgeous bag that is most likely going to get covered in sand and sun block. Target has plenty of beach bags that are reasonably priced.  Check out this straw striped tote or this paper crochet tote.

Target Pink Sraw Stripe Tote $34.99
Target Natural Paper Crochet Tote $24.99

Hats and sunglasses are also good to carry in your bag in case you need a break from the sun. This fedora from American Eagle is perfect for any beach outfit and even better, only $15.50! Whether you like classic aviators or funky, foldable glasses, American Eagle has the right pair for you.

AEO Zig-Zag Fedora $15.50
AE Black Aviator Sunglasses $15.50
AE Foldable Icon Sunglasses $9.50

What are your beach must-haves?

Jason Wu for Target

I’ve been eagerly awaiting the Jason Wu for Target collection and I’m happy to say it’s finally here! The collection hit stores on February 5th and it has taken all of my self-control not to buy everything in it. Jason Wu for Target allows any woman to wear the famous designer’s signature, polished looks for less.

The pieces in this collection are perfectly pretty. With clean lines and delicate details, the clothing is ultra-feminine.

A delicate pattern makes this dress stand out.

The collection is a great fit for any woman who loves classic looks but wants to try something other than her little black dress.

This white dress is even cuter with the black accents.

I particularly love the skirts and dresses, as they are all timeless.

The stripes make this pastel skirt pop.

These classic pieces will never go out of style.

Love this pretty, polished look.

Wu knows how to create a collection that’s perfect for any woman. He doesn’t cover his pieces in busy patterns, but instead, he applies a little bit of detail that gives the piece a distinct look of its own. I’m a huge fan of his purses that are a part of this line as well. They come in a range of sizes and styles and are bound to be the key accessory to any look.

This neutral purse will match any outfit.

The collection contains 53 pieces ranging from shoes, to accessories, to clothing. With prices between $19.99 and $59.99, Jason Wu for Target is perfect for any woman who wants to look good while sticking to a budget.  Just make sure you get everything you want from the collection soon because it won’t be available after March 6th.

Will you be checking out Jason Wu’s collection?
